The Senegal user group has a particular interest in libraries and archives through the GLAM projects.

This group is open to all persons interested in and committed to carrying out actions within the user group.

Goals

  1. Promote access to the free sharing of knowledge in Senegal;
  2. To build a community of contributors and contributors who work to edit and improve Wikipedia articles in all fields in Senegal for encyclopedic purposes;
  3. Raise awareness of Wikimedia projects in Senegal with the community of library information professionals through GLAM projects;
  4. Work for greater equity in the Wikimedia movement by promoting the inclusion of women in the group in Senegal;
  5. Seek partnerships with national and international institutions to promote Wikimedia projects across national languages in Senegal.

Historical

The current project to create the Senegal user group was born from the participation of the small Wikimedia community of Senegal in the Wiki Wake Up Africa project, an initiative to train and support African countries without user groups.

Two female librarians from Senegal led the way in this process, accompanied by several fellow Wikimedians. As they gain experience, they in turn train and retain new people in Senegal to join the project.

The Wikimedia community also approached the two precursors of the Wikimedia movement in Senegal to learn from their experiences, to join forces to achieve common goals, which are important in creating the user group.

All the necessary conditions and information have been gathered for the approval of the user group.

Future activities

In order to spread awareness of Wikimedia projects, we will work to conduct training in different areas of Senegal to impact the young talents that may be there. We will try to accompany the different communities to allow them to share local knowledge through the free sharing offered by the Wikimedia projects.

The spirit of volunteerism promoted by Wikimedia will be at the heart of our actions to mobilize people interested in contributing for pleasure through the right information and sources they will have to look up in advance to make the Wikimedia data reliable.

With a growing community of librarians and archivists, GLAM projects will be well-regarded to encourage librarians to contribute to Wikimedia by using reliable references from their information services.

Collaborations with archives and libraries will be established to help enhance Senegal's image heritage. Partnerships will also be forged with public and private support structures for better organisation of Wikimedia events in Senegal.
