Feminists in EdTech

For 2 weeks in February 2019, the curator of the @femedtech twitter account promoted editing by the account's followers on pages relating to the area of open education logged here.

Equality Edit-A-Thon

On 4 March 2019, University College Cork hosted an editathon focusing on translating across languages on equality themes.

Gender and Sexuality in Digital Culture

During a week of celebrations for Women's International Day, a group of MA students at Dublin City University were invited to create and improve articles, highlighting the amazing achievements of women in the arts, particularly filmmakers, game developers, gender activists and other key cis-female, trans or queer figures.

Women's Weeks Editathon

During a week of celebrations for Women's International Day, staff and students from Dublin City University were invited to create and improve articles, highlighting the amazing achievements of women in the arts, including artists, scientists, academics, politicians, and writers.

Writing Women Writers

As part of the Art+Feminism campaign, students and staff from Trinity College Dublin gathered to improve articles relating to the amazing achievements of women in the arts, particularly those represented in the various library, special and archive collections of Trinity.

Bunchúrsa Vicipéid

As part of our pilot programme working with secondary school students in Transition Year, a workshop was held in Scoil Chaitríona teaching a group of students to edit Vicipéid.

Women in Tech

To mark International Women's Day, Accenture invited WCI to facilitate an editing workshop with their staff focusing on creating or improving articles about Irish women or women working in Ireland.

TY Introduction

Continuing our work with the National Gallery of Ireland, we facilitated an editing workshop with Transition Year students who were on placement within the Gallery.

Art and Feminism

A demonstration of editing Wikipedia was held in the Library of National College of Art and Design for library staff as part of the Art+Feminism campaign.

Women in Science OpenSciGalway

As part of a series of events on Open Science in National University of Ireland, Galway, an editing event focused on editing articles relating to women in science was held on 8 April 2019.

BM202 Biomedical Seminars 2019

In January to April 2019, medical students in National University of Ireland, Galway edited medical articles as part of their module on biomedicine.

Art and Feminism Ulster Museum

As part of our Art+Feminism campaign, the first editathon was held in a GLAM institution in Northern Ireland, the Ulster Museum. This event was focused on the women artists, collectors and sitters of the Ulster Museum collections.

BRAVE Edit

Amnesty Ireland held the first in a series of events on 11 May 2019 as part of the BRAVE:Edit campaign, improving or creating articles on Women Human Rights Defenders. The second event took place on 9 December 2019.

DCU Vicipéid teaching

Meghan Dowling has continued her work teaching using Vicipéid in Dublin City University with a group of students.

PhotoIreland Festival

WCI were invited to host an editing workshop as part of the programme of PhotoIreland Festival 2019, focusing on articles about photographers from or working in Ireland.

Pastimes Past Times

To mark Heritage Week 2019, we partnered with the National Gallery of Ireland to hold an editing event on artists, collectors, sitters and donors relating to the collections of the Gallery.

WWCode Culture Night

Women Who Code Belfast invited us to collaborate on hosting an editing event for Belfast Culture Day on 21 September 2019. The event focused on women from or who lived or worked in Northern Ireland.

Trinity Chem

As part of celebrations for Chemistry Week, we partnered to host an editing event with the Department of Chemistry, Trinity College Dublin. The event focused on editing articles relating to WikiProject Chemistry's work.

UCD Advanced Information Skills

As part of our longest running education partnership, we continued to work with Dr Crystal Fulton with her second year students on editing historical Irish biographies.

IADT Anne Yeats

We partnered with Dr Elaine Sissons of the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology to host a module that saw students researching and improving articles relating to the life and work of Anne Yeats.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2019

Now in its sixth year, the Irish Wiki Loves Monuments is the national competition encouraged amateur and professional photographers to seek out and capture images of Ireland's national monuments. This year saw a continued interest in documenting sites with no image on Commons previously.

Wiki Science 2019

Ireland took part in Wiki Science for the third time in November/December 2019.

2018

Female Firsts

Wikimedia Community Ireland, National Doctors Training and Planning (NDTP) Spark Innovation Programme, and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) celebrated International Women's Day with a Wikipedia Editathon focusing on RCSI Female Firsts.

Art+Feminism is a campaign improving coverage of cis and transgender women, feminism and the arts on Wikipedia. This event with the staff of the NGI focused on the women connected with the Gallery as artists, sitters, donors and collectors.

Art and Feminism at University College Cork

At the Digital Arts and Humanities Active Learning Space, Fourth Floor, Food Science Building, University College Cork on 10 March 2018 from 12pm to 3pm a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to gender, art and feminism took place.

All Digital Week Hackathon

This event at UL was organised as part of the pan-European All Digital Week to debunk the many misconceptions that persist with this online resource. Supported by Wikimedia Community Ireland’s Dr Rebecca O’Neill, UL’s Michelle Breen and Sinéad Keogh hosted a Wikipedia Hackathon at the Glucksman Library on March 22.

Visualising Women

As part of the wider Art+Feminism campaign, an event in partnership with the Library of Trinity College, Dublin to create and improve articles, highlighting the amazing achievements of women in art, particularly those represented in the various art and archive collections of Trinity.

DCU Vicipéid teaching

2018 saw the first module taught using Vicipéid and the Outreach Dashboard was piloted by Meghan Dowling in Dublin City University.

Sybil in Limerick

A 3 day Wikipedia Editathon was held at the Hunt Museum, Limerick on May 17-19 with help from Limerick Lace, the City Museum and the City Library, the Hunt Museum Docents and the people of Limerick. The editathon also saw the first donation of images from an Irish GLAM to Wikimedia Commons.

Wikipedia skills workshop at DARIAH Ireland

As part of The Embedding Digital Literacies in HEIs Conference, a workshop was held for educators on the use of Wikipeda in the classroom on 22 June in University College Cork.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2018

Now in its fifth year, the Irish Wiki Loves Monuments is the national competition encouraged amateur and professional photographers to seek out and capture images of Ireland's national monuments. This year saw a huge expansion of the structures included.

To make Heritage Week 2018, an edit-a-thon (wikithon) centred on “Stories” and “Connections” took place in the National Gallery of Ireland. This year's the theme was ‘Share a Story: Make a Connection’. As 2018 is the European Year of Cultural Heritage, we invited members of the public as well as staff to engage with and develop our stories on Wikipedia on 8 September. We focused on our artists and objects but also on the fascinating stories of the National Gallery of Ireland, the events, the buildings and the people who contributed to and shaped our own Story over the years.

Wiki Loves Gorey

As a pilot project, a group of local Transition Year secondary level students learnt about citations and referencing by editing Wikipedia in the Gorey local library on 17 September.

So you want to be a Wiki editor

There have been calls to make wikis more diverse; not just in content but also in editors. This year at Octocon, we ran a How To session and a edit-a-thon on 20 October. The session’s aim was to teach the basics of wiki editing, along with how to create entries which highlight the lives and works of SFF authors from a range of different backgrounds.

Wiki Science 2018

Ireland took part in Wiki Science for the second time in November 2018. The winning images were exhibited at the SCI:COM conference, with a special prize awarded for an image depicting women in science again this year.

Wikipedia for Educators at Queens University Belfast

This workshop looked at the application of those skills such as critical assessment of source material, applying consistent and concise writing skills, and citation formats. The use of Wikipedia in educational settings, as a vehicle for writing production and publication, allows students to place their work within a context larger than the classroom. It took place on 11 November at QUB.

As part of their work placement within the Gallery, secondary school students were introduced to editing Wikipedia on 4 December. They then edited pages relating to the collections, people, and art of the Gallery.

National Healthcare Wikipedian in Residence

2018 saw the appointment of Ireland's first Wikipedian in Residence with Dr Niall O’Mara becoming the National Healthcare Wikipedian in Residence as part of a project of the National Health Library and Knowledge Service in partnership with the National Doctors Training and Planning (NDTP).

2017

EditWikiLit

In February, an in-class assignment got students to participate in a Wikipedia Editathon. This years students from the MA in English programmes and the MA in Irish Studies edited a range of literary, biographical and historical pages over the course of a two-hour editathon in University College Cork.

Dublin City University Editathon February 2017

DCU Library will host a Wikipedia editathon giving staff and students an introduction to contributing to Wikipedia. An editathon is an “organized event where editors edit and improve a specific topic or type of content, typically including basic editing training for new editor”. Staff and students with all levels of experience with Wikipedia or none are all welcome.

WikiwomenIE Maynooth University 2017

At Maynooth University, and supported by the Wikimedia Community Ireland, we are hosting an editathon on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2017. The aim is to add overlooked women and women’s work to Wikipedia.

WikiwomenIE NUI Galway 2017

At NUI Galway, and supported by the Wikimedia Community Ireland, we are proposing to host an editathon in the week of International Women’s Day, on Thursday 9th March 2017. The event will take place in the Alice Perry Engineering Building at NUI, Galway. The aim is to add overlooked women and women’s work to Wikipedia. Wikipedians of all experience levels are welcome to join us! We will copyedit, source, and write articles and can teach you how to do these things too!

As part of the events for International Women's Week at NUI Galway, one of our members gave a talk entitled The Missing Women of Wikipedia.

Trinity College Dublin GLAM March 2017

This editing workshop in the Berkeley Library, Trinity College Dublin, is a hands-on event in which participants can learn how to start editing Wikipedia with the help of trained and experienced Wikipedia editors. From setting up an account, to learning the anatomy of the good article, participants will be given the skills to add to and better understand one of the world's largest and most consulted online repositories of knowledge.

Beidh baint le hiadsan atá ag iarraidh a bheith ina eagarthóir Vicipéid sa todhchaí chomh maith.

This free training session will be facilitated by DCU staff and a representative from Wikimedia Community Ireland. The purpose of the session is to learn how to become a Wikipedia editor, with a view to contributing to the growth of Vicipéid (Irish language Wikipedia). Those who are interested in becoming a future Vicipéid trainers will also benefit.

Terry Pratchett Wikipedia Editing Workshop

In partnership with the Library of Trinity College, Dublin, a workshop focusing on the Library's Terry Pratchett collection in March. During the practical part of the workshop participants targeted a range of pages related to Terry Pratchett's works.

Wiki Loves Pride at GAZE

As part of the international Wiki Loves Pride initiative, Wikimedia Community Ireland and the GAZE International Film Festival celebrated LGBTQ history and culture on Wikipedia in July. The workshop took place in the Lighthouse Cinema, in Smithfield, Dublin.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017

Returning for its fourth year, the Irish Wiki Loves Monuments is the national competition encouraged amateur and professional photographers to seek out and capture images of Ireland's national monuments. The competition was launched at Archeofest in Merrion Square on 26 August during Heritage Week. The awards ceremony took place in the Science Gallery on 9 November.

Wiki Science 2017

Ireland took part in Wiki Science for the first time in November 2017. Officially launched at the WLM awards ceremony, the winning images were exhibited at the SCI:COM conference.

Digital Preservation Day

The Digital Repository of Ireland, Wikimedia Community Ireland, and the Library of Trinity College Dublin co-hosted a Digital Preservation Community Workshop on 30 November as part of TCD Library's marking of International Digital Preservation Day.

2016

A series evening meetups where science professional, amateur, or activists are invited to speak about a theme. The theme is in conjunction with the current exhibition schedule of the Science Gallery, Dublin.

PRONI WWI Edit-a-thon (4 February 2016)

The Somme Editathon will be held at PRONI on 4 February 2016 from 2:30-5:30. Wikipedians of all experience levels are welcome to join us! We will copyedit, source, and write articles and can teach you how to do these things too.

NUI Galway Photowalk (March)

The goal of this project is to improve the quality of photographs used in NUI Galway publications, press releases and on the website by running training courses for amateur staff photographers. More details can be found here.

Europeana 280 Irish inclusion (April)

Europeana 280 is a pan-European campaign to get people excited about Europe’s shared art heritage by celebrating the diverse and magnificent artworks that are a part of it. The campaign coincides with the launch of the Art History collections, one of Europeana's first thematic collection sites. All 28 EU Member States were invited to nominate 10 pieces of art held in their country that have contributed to a major European art movement. Ireland's participation can be found [here].

Museum Next Workshop (April)

As part of the Museum Next conference, Wikimedia Community Ireland are presenting a workshop on Wikipedia. The event aims to help turn participants into active users and contributors to Wikipedia. Participants will be able to develop their editing skills, as well as learning more about using Wikipedia as a tool in the GLAM sector. The workshop will take the form of three sections: firstly an introduction to Wikipedia, followed by a hands-on workshop of the basics of Wikipedia editing, finishing up an exploration of other ways to contribute to Wikipedia and other projects.

This year there are two workshops aimed at the WLM writing competition, one in NUI Galway, and a second in Science Gallery Dublin.

NUIG CEL263 Learning Technologies (21 October 2016)

On Friday 21 November the students in the CEL263 Learning Technologies module at NUI Galway will participate in an event on Wikipedia familiarisation for academics. The aim is to encourage the academic staff to consider becoming active editors on Wikipedia. All participants will (at least) upload an image to Wikimedia Commons in the category National University of Ireland, Galway.

History of Science, Technology, and Medicine in Ireland Workshop (12 November)

Interested in learning more about editing and contributing to Wikipedia and attending this year's HSTM Network Ireland conference? Why not make your first few edits whilst tucking into a sandwich from 1-2:30pm Saturday 12 November. Rebecca O'Neill will be lead trainer, all you need is a laptop to take part. No editing experience is necessary!

Intro to Wikipedia/Women in STEM Editathon Hosted by Engineers Ireland (8 February 2015)

Ever wondered how to get started editing Wikipedia? On Sunday 8th February an editathon will be held in the Engineers Ireland from 11:15-14:00, when experienced editors will guide you through your first edits. One of our aims is to improve and expand articles relating to Women in engineering and History of women in engineering, especially those from Ireland and the UK.

On Saturday 14th February an editathon will be held in the the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks from 13:00-16:30, when experienced editors will guide you through your first edits. One of our aims is to improve and expand articles relating to Ireland and the Irish during World War I.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014

Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual event which takes place across the globe every September. This year, Ireland is taking part for the first time in what is the world's largest photo competition. The national competition encouraged amateur and professional photographers to seek out and capture images of Ireland's national monuments, then share them with a global audience online. Over 2000 entries were received and the 10 winning entries that were chosen, now go through to compete in the international competition. Visit http://www.wikilovesmonuments.ie/ for all the details.
