Association edit

Cooperation with the Iron Library edit

After a successful cooperation last June as part of the Swiss Archive Day (as we reported already), the partnership with the Iron Library continues. The Iron Library was established in 1948 as a foundation of the company Georg Fischer. For the summer of 2018, the Library, located in the former Clarissan convent Paradies near Schaffhausen, offers two grants for a period of two weeks to experienced Wikipedians, who are willing to elaborate new articles or enhance content on Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. The Iron Library has been collecting literature on the history of iron and steel from the beginning of time until today. The range of the collection is extensive and covers the entire production cycle, from the extraction of raw ore to the processing of metals into finished products, for example by casting technology. This thematic focus is enriched by topics such as chemistry, geology and plastics, as well as holdings from the fields of technology (further information at www.eisenbibliothek.ch).

In addition to its Scholar-in-Residence program (see http://www.eisenbibliothek.ch/content/gf/ironlibrary/de/ironlibrary/sir.html), the Iron Library will be hosting Wikipedians as well as contributors to other Wikimedia projects engage intensively with their collections. The main objective is to create freely licensed content based on the holdings of the Iron Library and the Georg Fischer AG corporate archive. The Iron Library will consider and prefer applications of volunteers, who extensively want to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects by creating new articles, by extending, enhancing, translating or illustrating existing articles that keep with the thematic specialization of the Iron Library. Furthermore, the creation of Wikimedia content on the history of the Georg Fischer Corporation is also especially welcome because access to the holdings of the Corporate Archives is also being provided via the Iron Library’s reading room. If you are interested, send your application until May 31st, 2018 to WMCH. For further information contact ulrich.lantermann@wikimedia.ch

Cooperation with the Archives Cantonales Vaudoises edit

Another archive is looking to further its collaboration with Wikimedia CH after 2017's Swiss Archives Day, the Archives cantonales vaudoises, near Lausanne. Newly entrusted with the conservation of a collection of photographies by pioneer archaeologist Albert Naef, they are lokking to select the better quality ones, in order to upload them to Wikimedia Commons. In order for these images to illustrate articles on Wikipedia, they will organize one or two workshops in September 2018. Any Wikipedian wanting to lead or participate in leading the workshops along with the Archives cantonales vaudoises can write to flor.mechain@wikimedia.ch.

New publishing about biographies edit

Europe builds on biographies is the name of the conference proceedings of the ÖAW, which has just been published. The conference itself took place in October 2015. In this volume, an employee of Wikimedia CH under the title Wikipedia - a supplement in the biographical landscape describes the state of biographies within Wikipedia, which make up a substantial part of the article. He explains how one can recognize where the information came from, how it is related to relevance, and reveals the limitations of biographies within Wikipedia. The article is - like all other contributions of this conference volume - also available online (in German, page 155-168).

Collaboration with Muséomix edit

Muséomix with its motto "People makes museums" is an association that offers interactive workshops within museums. With its two events in Romandie and its two events in German-speaking areas, it is becoming a well-known association in Switzerland. Since one of its formats centers on photography, Museomix approached Wikimedia CH to organize a common event, which would allow for Wikimedia Commons uploads. The project is at its beginning, as we are looking for a museum with which to collaborate.

What happened in February? edit

Wikidata initiation workshop in Lausanne edit

Ulrich Lantermann während seines Vortrags.

Our Wikidata initiation workshop took place in Lausanne with Harmonia Amanda. Wikidata is garnering a lot of interest in Romandie, and 15 people attended, including 5 very motivated archivist-wikipedians. Because the workshop was directed to complete beginners, we did not get to edit Wikidata so much, in order to avoid introducing errors. But hopefully, we will be able to repeat the experience and take our exploration further.

Bern's Editing-Atelier at new location edit

On February 10, the regular Wikipedia writing workshop took place for the first time in the Theater Museum Bern. The Saturday-closing in the Swiss National Library had made the change necessary (we reported). Rarely has the event been so well attended! More than a dozen Wikipedians found space on a long row of tables in the middle of the books in the museum's own library. The welcome also included a guided tour of the museum, which is housed directly at Bern's main railway station. At the end of the work you could only see happy faces. On April 21, it will continue there.

Presentation and panel discussion in the Forum for University and Society in Bern edit

"Digital World, Analogue Experience" is the title of the series of events of the Faculty of Arts in Bern, to which the focus on "Digitalization in the field of tension between transparency and privacy" was laid on 24 February. Ulrich Lantermann, the community representative of Wikimedia CH, granted a "look behind the scenes of Wikipedia". He revealed how the interaction between the various authors works and how an article is created. For the approximately 350 listeners it was also exciting to find out which additional information can be read out of an article. Host then hosted Thomas Myrach non-chalant a panel discussion with all speakers and animated the visibly interested audience to further questions. Recording on Youtube

Talk on ePublication at the HEAD school in Geneva edit

User:13zhampu13 participated in inaugurating a series of talks at the Haute Ecole d'Art et Design de Genève with a talk on e-publication, and presented his project research on e-books with Wikimedia content, which he developed in the Netherlands. With his project, a Wikipedia article can be reformatted to a more aesthetically pleasing format, and which can be downloaded to a reader. Feedback concentrated on the fact that the epublication format proposed does not allow to include all authors of an article.

Announcements edit

General Assembly edit

Wikimedia CH's General Assembly 2018 will take place on Saturday, March 24th at the Pädagogische Hochschule, in Bern. All the information about the day will be updated to [this page] shortly. Wikipedia Workcamp on Mont-Soleil edit

From March 16th to 25th, around a dozen volunteers will be immersing themselves intensively in Wikipedia as part of the format Wikipedia for Peace. Organizer is the Service Civil International (SCI). This camp is the first cooperation between Wikimedia Switzerland and SCI Switzerland. Similar cooperation happened in Austria and Germany between SCI and the local Wikimedia chapters before. We will get to know Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects and will support the aim to make quality content about climate and social justice in the frame of the SCI campaign “climate4peace”. Each volunteer is invited to attend this week and look after the volunteers from different countries in their work. Contact person for us is user: Hadi, who is happy about every helping hand this week. Please arrange a day directly with him: diego.haettenschwiler@wikipedian.ch.

GLAM-on-Tour at MIGROS edit

Who does not know the retail chain with the orange "M"? Our contacts in the series GLAM-on-Tour will this time open the doors to the archives of this soon 100-year-old cooperative giant in Zurich, which has become so well known through its formative founding figure Gottlieb Duttweiler. From the 12th to the 15th of April we will again be able to offer a varied program for up to 20 Wikipedians, thankfully supported by Migro Culture Percentage. Registration deadline is April 1st (no joke).
