Wikimedia CH/Micro Grant/Italian-speaking hackathon satellite event 2024

Please provide the following information for your micro-grant request:

Your Username: Ferdi2005

Your Country of residence: Italy

Amount requested: 1000 CHF We had originally asked a grant of 5000 USD to Wikimedia Foundation to pay for all the expenses related to the event (venue, food and scholarships for participants). Only 2500 USD were awarded, so to cover the expenses of the event we asking: 1000 EUR as a microgrant to WMIT, 1000 CHF to WMCH and some other funds (still to be determined) to Italian Linux Society. The funds from WMCH will essentially cover food and snacks for the event days.

Planned activity: On the 20th and the 21th April 2024 (with arrivals on the 19th) we are holding a satellite event of Wikimedia Hackathon, the gathering (this year in Tallin) of the Wikimedia tech community, for Italian-speaking people. The event will be in Catania, a town in Sourthern Italy.

We aim to bring together the most active Italian-speaking contributors who have interest and skills in the technical areas of the Wikimedian movement, and offer them the experience of working together on projects during two days.

Therefore, we will collect and address the needs from the Italian-speaking projects (for example: create Lua templates on Italian Wikinews, develop a useful userscript on Italian Wikisource, create an import bot for GLAM projects on Wikidata), including those needs arising from Swiss-related topics and project. All the technical needs connected to WMCH / to the Swiss-related projects will be included in the worklist (e.g. if there is some need related to the completion of the new Portale:Ticino on it.Wikipedia).

In the long run, we aim to create connections between the existing technical contributors and like-minded people who are interested in open source development, to offer them to contribute to the Wikimedia ecosystem, in order to create a more structured group and welcome more volunteers in the area.

People involved
(e.g. How many people can benefit from the micro grant you request):

10-15 people among the most active and expert contributors in the tech area on Italian-speaking projects, among with free software enthusiasts willing to approach the technical contributions to Wikimedia projects. We are sure this will be beneficial for many people on the Italian-speaking Wikimedia projects, including for Swiss content and users.

We've already asked to the community manager for the Italian-speaking area, Lia Beretta, to share with us all the technical needs of the Swiss community.

Please explain what influence your activity will have on Wikimedia Projects
(e.g. quantitative: number of new pictures uploaded to commons, no of new articles created / qualitative: strengthen the community of german-speaking wikipedia authors etc,):

We are planning to work on the technical needs that will emerge from the Italian-speaking community, including the Swiss-related topics. With this event, we also plan to increase the links and to strengthen the links among the Italian-speaking technical community.

Please provide links to your contributions after your project or activity ended:
Please provide the links to the categories on Wikimedia Commons, to the articles on Wikipedia or any other contributions on Wikimedia projects:

We will prepare a detailed report on what we improved technically and on the impact of the event.

Important: AFTER having submitted your request, please write an eMail to info@wikimedia.ch with your contact details (at least: Name, Surname, Email address)
