The problem and the context edit

What is the problem you're trying to solve? edit

Sum of all GLAMs aims to improve the information about heritage institutions and performing arts organizations on Wikidata and to promote the use of this information on Wikipedia and in other projects and online services. The goal is to achieve a complete and high-quality inventory of heritage institutions, arts organizations, and performing arts venues, and to make this information available on an international level.

What is your solution to this problem (please explain the context and the solution)? edit

The project pursues a two-pronged strategy:

  1. data provision and maintenance through a crowdsourcing approach; and
  2. promotion of actual data use to encourage data provision in the first place.

The main focus of the project activities planned for 2023 is on introducing potential contributors to Wikidata and teaching them how to interact with the platform.

We will thereby take a step back, reach out to the providers of various learning formats (introductory videos, introductory workshops, online tutorials, Wikidata tours, on-demand coaching & support, Live Editing Wikidata, Wikidata Lab, Wikidata Coffee Breaks, or institutionalized, collective learning formats, such as Hackday Series or Wikidata Pilots) and subject the different formats to a peer evaluation. The goal is to learn from each other in view of improving the different offers, but also to do a better job in cross-promoting the various offers, as new contributors are often unaware of the existing learning formats.

In parallel, we will continue to offer our own learning formats, such as the Wikidata Introductory Workshops and the Wikidata Coffee Breaks. We will further develop our own offer of Wikidata Tutorials and Introductory Workshops. The tutorials website [1] will be overhauled and improved: alternative learning formats will be listed and our own tutorials will be contextualized better. In order to increase the offer of tutorials across different languages, we will implement a "Tutorial Factory" that facilites the crowdsourcing of translations.

We will also continue to foster partnerships with umbrella associations and organizations planning to ingest and maintain a part of their data on Wikidata (e.g. Swiss National Library, Association of Swiss Archivists, Swiss Archives for the Performing Arts, Corodis, Canadian Association for the Performing Arts).

Increased efforts will go into the promotion of our offers through various channels (social media, newsletters, mailing lists, cooperation with outreach campaigns).

We will continue to encourage the use of data from Wikidata in various contexts through different activities of our association. This is however not a major focus in the further implementation of the Sum of All GLAMs project proper. We have in particular abandoned the idea of directly contributing to the creation of Wikidata-powered infoboxes on Wikipedia, partly due to a lack of staff with the required set of competences, and partly due to the reluctance, especially of the German Wikipedia community, when it comes to adopting Wikidata-powered infoboxes. We are however in touch with various organizations already making or planning to make more intensive use of data from Wikidata and have started to tailor the content of our learning formats to match and complement their endeavours.

Project goals edit

  1. Provide an overview of different learning formats, setting forth their pros and cons
  2. Establish partnerships for the cross-promotion of learning formats / offers
  3. Create new tutorials
  4. Increase the language coverage of existing tutorials
  5. Develop new introductory workshops (SPARQL queries, Structured Data on Commons)
  6. Continue to offer Wikidata Introductory Workshops and Wikidata Coffee Breaks
  7. Improve the quality of presentation and use of the Wikidata Tutorials

Project impact edit

How will you know if you have met your goals? edit

Note that the tables below reflect the current state of project planning and are based on the assumption that the project will be fully funded. A re-definition of project goals may be needed if funding goals are not met.

Goal Measures of Success
Provide an overview of different learning formats, setting forth their pros and cons Overview created and published as part of a Community of Practice effort
Establish partnerships for the cross-promotion of learning formats / offers Learning formats / offers from three different organizations are the object of regular cross-promotion activities
Create new tutorials 4 new tutorials produced
Increase the language coverage of existing tutorials 16 additional translations completed & published
Develop new introductory workshops (SPARQL queries, Structured Data on Commons) 2 new introductory workshops created and carried out at least once
Continue to offer Wikidata Introductory Workshops and Wikidata Coffee Breaks See objectives in the table below
Improve the quality of presentation and use of the Wikidata Tutorials The website has been overhauled based on the feedback received.

Usage statistics are available and show a clear upward trend.
