Abstract:

Wiki Loves Earth is the biggest photo competition devoted to picturing natural protected areas, which is powered by local teams of mostly volunteer organizers. Each year, more countries and territories join to organize a contest locally, and even more volunteers are eager to join to contribute to the project in different ways, which means it is a very relevant competition.

But how do we do the promotion for the Wiki Loves Earth, and in which way do we engage volunteers and ambassadors to contribute? The session will present the contest itself, its current results, and achievements. We will share our best practices of promotion of the contest on our channels among the organizers and how we engage them to join, as well as the volunteers who are helping out with the contest: practices of what worked and what didn’t. Also, we want to represent WLE not only from the International perspective but also from the local one. Organizers from CEE region will share their perspective and unique experiences of promoting the contest as well.

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of CEE?

As some countries from the CEE region have actively participated in the contest for many years, we find it beneficial for them to hear about the competition in more detail. Also, there are many countries in this region that are still doubting joining or never participated, so it is a great chance to show them this perspective.

A general brief of the desired outcomes: To spread more awareness about the contest and its current state regionally; To have an open space for everyone interested in the contest to discuss ideas for the project’s development and share the best practices in organizing; To have a clear understanding and learnings of the audience in the project’s updates, results, current state, and the points for improvement, which will lead them to learn and join the contest in future.
