Abstract:

Wikimedia Ukraine has been organising Wiki Loves photo contests for over 10 years, starting with our first Wiki Loves Monuments contest in 2012. Over these years we implemented multiple changes to keep participants interested and involved. While there is now a community of veteran Wiki Loves contributors who deeply care about the contest, keeping the contest relevant and accessible for newbies is important. Among ideas we experimented are regional and special thematic photo competition categories (like Jewish heritage), separate categories for the highest number of monuments pictured, awards for previously undocumented monuments, to most prolific newbies etc.

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of CEE?

The idea is to discuss different approaches that worked in Ukraine, and also hear the ideas and experiences from the audience. It will be beneficial for organisers of Wiki Loves photo competitions around the region. Expected outcomes: participants learning how to improve Wiki Loves competitions in their countries or communities, have the contest relevant even to people taking part for years, while creating space for newbies, and motivating them to join next year. (This can be a presentation with mainly focus on WLX Ukraine experience or a workshop with more of a mix of experience sharing and brainstorming).
