Summary

Many Wikimedia activities require funding, and WMF grants programmes are comparatively welcoming sources for many affiliates. However, as welcoming they are, several requirements need to be met to write a successful grant application. Strong understanding of these requirements can make both the affiliate's and grantmakers' lives easier and lead to more great work getting done, so check out the talk by Alex and join me afterwards!

The presentation reflects learnings from a grant making coms member perspective; mostly from FDC, partially from GAC possibly with an input from my colleagues:). I will discuss general values of your reporting, points we could improve and good practices from particular affiliates. Some of the items reflect only application writing, some of them go deeper: to programme design and evaluation, and even general strategy and governance questions. We will also talk about particular tools like SMART goals, metrics and logic models.

The presenting person is also very open to the feedback, as we can work on this process and improve it together.

Expected outcomes

Follow-up individual talks and stronger grant applications. Improvements to the process.

Belief that applications and reporting are not only a chore, but also a way to make your organization even better.
