full report...

I had to move away from the position of scanning titles from libraries in favor of developing contests in the community. This helps to retain an audience in the long term.

Competition 1
Voya (social-politics magazine). 18 December 2024–20 February 2025

Over 600 pages have been proofread and recognized so far. Will help wikitext and wikipedia. In theory, it is also possible to highlight data. Overall the project has value for a free library. Additionally it can be a starting point for humanities or social researchers because of the quality and more neutral materials of the publication. A report in the stats will be added upon completion. Banned publication in the USSR.

Competition 2
LNV (Literaturno-naukovyi vistnyk/ Literary and scientific bulletin). 21 February–21 April 2025

In fact, this edition carries one of the few periodical literary magazines of the generation of writers of the 19th and early 20th century. Most of the authors did not pass Soviet-era censorship.

Competition 3
Hlobus (political-cultural magazines with many illustrating life of Ukraine and World 1920s). 21 April–21 June 2025

One of the few publications of the interwar period that published reports with photos of everyday life in Ukraine. The editor-in-chief is shot by the authorities. More than 90% of the authors were also killed by the Stalinist regime.

Lessons

Running contests helps to unite the Ukrainian Wikisource community. In my vision I tried to balance between culturally relevant publications, and also those that provide interest in the long term. For example, the journal “Volya” allows to reveal the political events of the 1920s in recent times relatively free information from Ukraine (further editions carry censorship or ideology of political parties). In the edition “LNV” there are many unique materials of writers and poets, which have not yet been included in the anthology of Ukrainian literature. The Hlobus is one of the very few publications of its time that was illustrated with photographs and reports of its time. Moreover, there is always a problem with illustrations, as many have not yet been placed in the public space. In general, the project covered Wikiquote, Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. The level of involvement in contests allows scaling of stable Wikisource contributors. Motivation adds value by rewarding them for what they do for free knowledge.
