Why librarians should edit Wikipedia: A testimonial from Switzerland

Since April, the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne (BCUL) hosts, on a monthly basis, Wikipedian get-togethers in their Unitheque room, referred as the "Wikipermanences". How do they proceed and what happens during those gatherings? Basically, between noon and 2 pm, representatives of Wikimedia CH, the Swiss Wikimedia chapter, are available to all members of the general public to answer any questions they may have. You can show up whenever you wish and stay as long as you want. The entrance is open to all, there are no strings attached.

You might think you have nothing interesting enough to tell the world to become a Wikipedia editor - maybe you believe that you are not enough of an expert to contribute to articles ? Or, maybe you believe that editing is complicated and requires you to register and hold technical competencies?

Having believed all the above myself, the Wikipermanence organised in our venue enabled me take a step forward towards editing on Wikipedia. After all, why not me? Are those beliefs justified after all?

Myself, having never edited a Wikipedia page before, I began with a simple question - how to proceed? I was quickly introduced to editing pages by Frédéric, a member of Wikimedia CH, who is also working at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and passionate about Wikipedia. I quickly realised that editing an already existing page is as easy as pie. Previously, the editing option required an understanding of the wikipedia language to code information, nowadays, there is a WYSIWYG editor which enables you to modify pages intuitively.

To edit a page, there is no need to have an existing user profile, or any requirement of a previous knowledge of Wikipedia codes. All you have to do is to click on the link entitled "edit" (in French: "modifier") next to each section’s title to open a very straightforward editing window. Before confirming any modifications, it is asked to detail in a couple of lines the type of corrections you contributed, so that one can follow up on them. Indeed, all the changes are stored with the IP address of the computer used to make those changes from, or with the username of the contributor if he has a Wikipedia profile.

How can we librarians add value to this area of knowledge ? Actually, on several levels, as we all know something - either from our professional activity, or from our personal interests - which enables us to contribute by adding or amending Wikipedia entries. Or if your favorite hobby is grammar and checking details, you could also participate by correcting any mistakes you come across. More specifically, we can be quite particular on providing adequate references in the bibliographies. At a beginner’s level, I was able to correct the "Publications" section of an article concerning a public figure, as the bibliography was not presented properly with incomplete sources. With our professional backgrounds, who better than librarians may check the quality of the bibliographies as well as complete them if required ?

Wikipedia's WYSIWYG editor provides multiple areas to fill out and automatically compiles the information with the correct Wikipedia presentation model. There is no need to select a particular style, it is all done automatically.

If you have a professional or a personal area of expertise, then your contribution may be even more important in creating a page, instead of completing an existing page‘s content. In this case only, it's better to create a profile and officially enter the community of Wikipedia editors.

So, what are you waiting for to participate in one of these Wikipermanences? It is an easy opportunity to discover the anonymous world of many editors and who knows, maybe getting started yourself!

Depuis avril dernier, la Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire - Lausanne (BCUL) accueille à la salle de formation de l’Unithèque une rencontre mensuelle de Wikipédiens, les Wikipermanences. Concrètement, comment cela se passe-t-il ? Entre 12h et 14h, des représentants de Wikimedia CH, le chapitre suisse du mouvement Wikimedia, se mettent à disposition du public pour répondre à leurs questions en tout genre. Vous venez quand vous voulez, le temps que vous souhaitez. L’entrée est libre et sans contrainte.

Peut-être vous dites-vous que vous n’avez rien d’assez intéressant à dire au monde pour devenir éditeur Wikipedia, peut-être pensez-vous ne pas être assez expert pour écrire des articles, ou encore vous imaginez-vous que modifier des pages est compliqué, nécessite de s’enregistrer et d’avoir des compétences techniques, etc. Portée moi-même par ces croyances, la Wikipermanence organisée en nos locaux a été l’élément moteur pour faire un premier pas vers l’édition Wikipedia. Après tout, pourquoi pas moi ? Ces croyances sont-elles justifiées ?

Je suis arrivée avec une question toute simple : je n’ai jamais édité de pages sur Wikipedia. Comment fait-on ? J’ai ainsi été rapidement introduite à l’édition de pages par Frédéric, un membre de Wikimedia CH aussi en activité à l’Université de Lausanne (UNIL) et mordu de Wikipedia. Très vite, on constate que l’édition d’une page déjà créée s’avère un jeu d’enfant. Alors qu’avant il n’y avait qu’un éditeur nécessitant de connaître le langage Wikipedia pour coder l’information, aujourd’hui, il y a un éditeur WYSIWYG[1] qui permet de modifier des pages de façon très intuitive.

Pour éditer une page, nul besoin d’avoir un profil, nul besoin de connaître les codes Wikipedia. Il suffit de cliquer sur le lien « modifier » qui est à côté de chaque titre de section pour que s’ouvre une fenêtre d’édition toute simple. Avant toute validation, il vous est demandé de décrire en quelques mots la nature de votre correction, afin qu’un suivi puisse être fait sur celle-ci. En effet, toutes les modifications sont reprises dans un historique avec l’adresse IP de l’ordinateur depuis lequel le texte a été modifié ou encore avec le pseudo de l’auteur, si celui-ci a un profil Wikipedia.

En quoi, nous, bibliothécaires, pouvons-nous apporter une valeur ajoutée dans cet univers du savoir ? A de multiples niveaux, car nous savons tous des choses, soit par profession, soit par passion, que nous pouvons partager en complétant ou corrigeant des entrées Wikipedia. Ou si votre dada est l’exactitude orthographique et la vérification des détails, vous pouvez aussi mettre la main à la pâte en rectifiant toutes les coquilles. De façon plus spécifique, nous pouvons mettre notre grain de sel dans tout ce qui concerne les références bibliographiques. A titre d’initiation, j'ai pu corriger la rubrique « Publications » d’un article sur une personnalité publique, car la bibliographie était mal rédigée, les sources mal citées ou incomplètes. Avec nos connaissances métier, qui mieux que nous peut vérifier la qualité des notices bibliographiques et les compléter le cas échéant ? L’éditeur de Wikipedia propose des multiples champs très simples à remplir et il fait automatiquement la mise en forme des références bibliographiques selon le modèle en vigueur sur Wikipedia. Nul besoin de choisir un modèle de citation. C’est automatique.

Et si vous avez un domaine d’expertise professionnel ou personnel, alors votre contribution peut être encore plus importante : créer une page, compléter le contenu d’une page existante, … Dans ce cas uniquement, vous devrez vous créer un profil et rentrer officiellement dans la communauté des éditeurs.

Alors, qu’attendez-vous pour participer à l’une de ces Wikipermanences ? C’est une occasion facile de découvrir l’univers anonyme des multiples éditeurs de Wikipedia et qui sait, peut-être de vous y mettre aussi !
