15 volunteers from all over the world (Russia, Kyrgyztan, Ukraine, Poland, UK, Germany, Spain) met for 5 days (from 23rd of June to 27th of June) in Madrid to increase the visibility of lgbt issues and activists by adding content to Wikiprojects. The idea of the event came about because of the WorldPride being held this year in Madrid, Spain. WorldPride is an event that promotes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT pride) issues on an international level through parades, festivals and other cultural activities. Founded by Paul Stenson to celebrate the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the inaugural WorldPride was held in Rome in 2000. The second WorldPride was awarded to Jerusalem in 2006, WorldPride 2012 was awarded to London, World Pride 2014 was awarded to Toronto and, finally, World Pride 2017 is being held in Madrid. The next WorldPride will be held in New York in 2019 and we were thinking about organizing a similar event in New York then.
WorldPride in Madrid didn't only give us the chance to meet and create content together but also to take part in different concerts and cultural events during the WorldPride. Most importantly we had the chance to participate in the human rights summit in Madrid and meet people along the lines of the first openly gay female prime minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir or the vice- president of InterPride Jan van Dalen.
The event took place under the umbrella of Wikipedia for Peace. WfP is a community project organized by Wikimedia focused on improving content on social movements, justice and peace. So far, two writing camps took place in Austria, in 2015 and 2016, organized by Wikimedia Austria and Service Civil International Austria. The movement expanded to Spain and Germany in 2017.
- What we did
The writing event took place at Medialab-Prado on June 23 and 24. The venue is a citizen production, research and dissemination laboratory that explores the forms of experimentation and collaborative learning that have emerged from digital networks, and it is located at the city center of Madrid. People were arriving throughout the day; in total we were 15 participants from several countries. The atmosphere was great and productive and we managed to write or translate 49 articles in 10 different languages. Our results can be seen on the result page.
Among the articles were the first ones on sexual diversity in Kyrgyz ever written. We want to especially thank DaddyCell (explanation of user name: I'm writing something about mother cells... so I'm going to call myself MotherCell.... NO... FatherCell.... NO.... DaddyCell!!!) for all of the great proposals on what exactly to write on in the field of gender and sexual diversity and also for assisting all new editors in writing their first articles. We had a lot to celebrate so we went for a concert of Mayte Martin, a benefice concert for disabled lgbt people in Matadero. This is a great location, a former slaughterhouse where now a lot of cultural institutions are based. Also we found our mascot for the Cuteness Association: the travel moose!
On the 25th, as a free day, we had a city tour in which we visited Plaza Mayor, Catedral de la Almudena, Palacio Real and Templo de Debod. The day was cloudy and stormy, there were even a few drops of water that fell down after months of dryness!. We also visited Reina Sofía Museum and saw artworks from Picasso and Dalí.
- Madrid Summit
On the 26th Madrid Summit started. The organization provided us with free tickets for the participants and two press passes to take photos of the official talks but also several speakers to obtain portait photos. Among the mosts memorable moments were meeting the vice-president of InterPride Frank van Dalen, who was especially interested in learning about the situation in Russia from our Russian participant, and the talk of the former prime minister of Island, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, which left some participants in tears. On the 27th a couple of participants already had to leave and those who remained in Madrid were able to attend the round table discussion in the main auditorium that we were invited to participate in. Florence Claes, from Wikimedia Spain, did a great job on the topic of "Internet & social networks role in making minorities visible".

15 personas de varios países (Rusia, Kirguistán, Ucrania, Polonia, Reino Unido, Alemania, España) se reunieron durante 5 días (del 23 al 27 de junio) en Madrid para aumentar la visibilidad de temas y activistas lgbt mediante la adición de contenido a Wikipedia. La idea del evento surgió con motivo de la celebración del World Pride, que este año era en Madrid, España. World Pride es un evento que promueve el orgullo LGBT a nivel internacional a través de desfiles, festivales y otras actividades culturales. Fundado por Paul Stenson para celebrar el aniversario de los disturbios de Stonewall, el primer World Pride se celebró en Roma en 2000. El segundo World Pride fue otorgado a Jerusalén en 2006, World Pride 2012 fue otorgado a Londres, World Pride 2014 fue otorgado a Toronto y, finalmente , World Pride 2017 se celebró en Madrid. El próximo World Pride se celebrará en Nueva York en 2019 y estamos pensando organizar un evento similar allí.
World Pride en Madrid no solo nos dio la oportunidad de conocernos y crear contenidos conjuntamente, sino también de participar en diferentes conciertos y eventos culturales durante la celebración. Lo más importante es que tuvimos la oportunidad de participar en la cumbre internacional de derechos humanos y de conocer a personas como la primera ministra abiertamente homosexual, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, o el vicepresidente de InterPride, Jan van Dalen.
El evento se desarrolló en el marco de Wikipedia for Peace. WfP es un proyecto comunitario organizado por Wikimedia enfocado en mejorar el contenido sobre los movimientos sociales, la justicia y la paz. Hasta ahora tuvieron lugar dos eventos de edición en Austria, en 2015 y 2016, organizados por Wikimedia Austria y Service Civil International Austria. El movimiento se expandió a España y Alemania en 2017.
- ¿Qué hicimos?
El evento de edición tuvo lugar en Medialab-Prado los días 23 y 24 de junio. Este espacio es un laboratorio ciudadano de producción, investigación y difusión que explora las formas de experimentación y aprendizaje colaborativo que han surgido de las redes digitales y se ubica en el centro de Madrid. La gente fue llegando a lo largo del día; en total fuimos 15 participantes de varios países. El ambiente fue estupendo y productivo y logramos redactar o traducir 49 artículos en 10 idiomas diferentes. Los resultados se pueden ver en la página del evento.
Entre los artículos elaborados estaban los primeros sobre la diversidad sexual en Kirguistán. Queremos agradecer especialmente a DaddyCell (explicación del nombre de usuario: estoy escribiendo algo sobre las células madre ... así que me voy a llamar MotherCell ... NO ... FatherCell .... NO .... DaddyCell!!!) por todas sus propuestas sobre qué escribir exactamente en el campo de género y diversidad sexual y también por ayudar a los nuevos editores a escribir sus primeros artículos. Tuvimos mucho que celebrar así que fuimos a un concierto de Mayte Martin, un concierto benéfico por las personas lgbt discapacitadas en Matadero; esta es una gran ubicación, un antiguo matadero en el que ahora tienen sede muchas instituciones culturales. También encontramos nuestra mascota para la Cuteness Association: el alce viajero!
El día 25 hicimos un recorrido por la ciudad, visitando la Plaza Mayor, la Catedral de la Almudena, el Palacio Real y el Templo de Debod. El día estaba nublado y tormentoso, cayeron incluso unas pocas gotas de agua después de meses de sequía!. También visitamos el Museo Reina Sofía donde contemplamos obras de arte de Picasso y Dalí.
- Madrid Summit
El día 26 comenzó el Madrid Summit. La organización nos proporcionó entradas gratis y dos pases de prensa para obtener fotos de las sesiones oficiales y fotos de retrato. Entre los momentos más memorables están el encuentro con el vicepresidente de InterPride, Frank van Dalen, que se interesó especialmente por la situación en Rusia a través de nuestro participante ruso, y la charla de la ex primera ministra de Islandia, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, que provocó la emoción entre la audiencia. El día 27 un par de participantes tuvieron ya que viajar pero quienes quedamos en Madrid pudimos asistir a la mesa redonda en el auditorio principal a la que nos invitaron a participar. Florencia Claes, de Wikimedia España, hizo un gran trabajo sobre el tema "La labor de Internet y las Redes Sociales en dar visibilidad a las minorías".
