Summary edit

Science has to be visible, Wikipedia has to be illustrated. Both great goals met in Wiki Science Competition, and here are winners of its Ukrainian part.

Body edit

Wiki Science Contest is one of the three photo contests to be organised by Wikimedia chapter in Ukraine. Its goal is to nourish Wikimedia Commons — and eventually Wikipedia articles — with scientific photos and non-photografic media. Wiki Science Contest was held in Ukraine for the third time and is happy to have some great winners.

120 participants took part in local WSC, they uploaded 1035 images. Most of the images were uploaded to Living Organisms category. Ukraine thus took the third place among 66 countries, more pictures were uploaded from only USA and RF.

Wikimedia Ukraine organised this photo contest in partnership with Days of Science and My Science projects, and Unia Scientifica non-profit, which helped to reach academic audience and researchers. Jury consisted of 5 persons, each of them being pro in their research field: physicist Anton Senenko, archeologist Evelina Kravchenko, geologist Serhii Vovniuk, ecologist and zoologist Nataliia Atamas, biochemist and microscopist Kyrylo Pyrshev, astrophysicist Maksym Tsizh.

Winners were chosen in seven nominations which are Non-photographic media, Astronomy, Image sets, Microscopy, People in science, Living organisms and General category. Awards ceremony was held in Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology of NAS of Ukraine in Kyiv in December 2017.
