WikiCamp in ArmeniaEdit

This summer a group of active young Western-Armenian Wikipedia editors from the Armenian Diaspora attended the annual WikiCamp in Armenia. The 9-day long event was organized in Tsaghkadzor, on August 19-27, 2018.

Every year a group of the most-active young editors - mostly high school students - are selected to attend the WikiCamp. The selection of the participants is based on the statistics of monthly editing of Western Armenian Wikipedia entries.

This year six students from Lebanon were invited to take part in the WikiCamp. They were accompanied by their teacher, Mrs. Sevan Tanielian-Megerian. It is worth mentioning that another active student and her teacher were invited to the 2018 WikiCamp, however, they were unable to attend due to personal inconveniences.

Throughout the WikiCamp the participants joined their peers from Armenia to edit new Wikipedia articles and books in Wikisource. In total, 44 new Western Armenian articles were created and one Western Armenian book was edited.

The WikiCamp program also included funtime and sightseeing activities.

Wiki Summer School in AleppoEdit

The first-ever Wiki Summer-School took place in Aleppo from August 27 to September 1, 2018. The event was organized in close collaboration with the local chapter of Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Association. It is worth mentioning that this initiative was brought to life with the active support of the local alumni of Wikipedia Teachers’ Training held in Armenia in 2017 and 2018.

The purpose of the Wiki Summer School was to increase the number of involved editors from Aleppo and to encourage their regular participation in writing and improving Western Armenian wikipedia entries.

Over six days of the training, a total number of 25 participants - students and other active members of the local Armenian community - learned about Wikipedia and Wikisource. They were also trained in writing Wikipedia entries in Western Armenian.

Following to this Wiki Summer School, the Aleppo Chapter of Hamazkayin initiated a Wiki Club. Also, Summer School participants have started working on forming additional Wiki Clubs within their schools.

Wikimedia CEE MeetingEdit

The Western Armenian Wikipedia coordinator took part in 7th annual Wikimedia Central and Eastern Europe Meeting in Lviv, Ukraine in October 13-15, 2018. The Meeting centered on Wikimedia projects (such as Wikipedia and other similar projects). This will play an important role in the further development of the Western Armenian Wikipedia. Specifically, the project coordinator gained the following skills much needed after Western Armenian Wikipedia become a separate entity: Selecting and collaborating with partners (action planning, budget planning, task management, etc.) Managing Wiki Data: information uploading and linking all related information into categories.

Western-Armenian Edit-a-thonsEdit

September 14-15, 2018Edit

The first Western-Armenianedit-a-thon took place in mid-September and was an immediate success in terms of active participation of old-time and new editors of Western-Armenian Wikipedia. The two day online event brought together over 19 editors from Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, France, and Armenia in a round-the-day pursuit of creating new Western-Armenian Wikipedia entries and improving the already existing ones.

The edit-a-thon focused on the two following topics:

  • Armenian traditional costumes
  • Cuisine (Armenian and international)

In all, the edit-a-thon produced 64 new articles and 64 improved ones.

This first edit-a-thon generated a great excitement in the Western-Armenia Wikipedia community and was an opportunity for the editors to work as a team and unite their efforts in a specific goal within a specific time period. It is planned to organize another edit-a-thon in October, 2018.

October 12-24, 2018Edit

Following to the success of the first-ever Western-Armenian edit-a-thon, another one took place in mid-October. Initially planned for the weekend of October 12-14, the first round of the edit-a-thon drew only a few participants - much less than what was anticipated based on the editors’ feedback prior to the event. The low turnover was explained due to too many community events and activities throughout various regions in the diaspora. However, the editors expressed their willingness to take part in the second round of the edit-a-thon. Therefore, the event was repeated on October 20 and lasted until October 24. It drew active participation from old-time and new editors of Western-Armenian Wikipedia.

Throughout the online event, 7 editors from Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, France, and Armenia joined their efforts to create and improve a total of 27 Western-Armenian Wikipedia entries.

The second edit-a-thon focused on the two following topics:

  • Charles Aznavour and his legacy
  • Armenian and international theater and stage

November 23-24-25, 2018Edit

With its third consecutive monthly edit-a-thon, the Western-Armenian Wikipedia initiative turned this online event into a much anticipated one among its editors.

Organized over the weekend of 23-25 November, the third edit-a-thon mainly focused on improving already existing articles. However, it offered its participants the opportunity to edit new articles related to health and medicine.

Throughout the online event, 6 editors from Syria, Lebanon, Greece, and Armenia joined their efforts to create and improve a total of 18 Western-Armenian Wikipedia entries.

December 14-15-16, 201Edit

The fourth Western-Armenian edit-a-thon was the final one for the year 2018. It took place in mid December and once again gathered together a group of active Western-Armenian Wikipedia editors.

The three-day online event brought together editors from Syria, Lebanon, and Armenia in creating new Western-Armenian Wikipedia entries and improving the already existing ones.

This time around, the edit-a-thon focused on completing the list of potential articles that were not edited or improved during the past three events. Thus, over one hundred articles on various topics and with relevant sources were offered to the editors.

In all, 11 new articled were edited and 4 articles were improved.
