Financial-Economic Wiki Month 2023

On May 26-28 a wiki gathering took place in Tsaghkadzor within the framework of “Financial-Economic Wiki Month 2023” competition organized in collaboration with the Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia. The participants were selected based on their results demonstrated during the wiki month which started on April 28. The gathering brought together 15 wiki editors who created 95 articles with a volume of 1,560,000 bytes during the two days of the gathering. Meanwhile, throughout the wiki month all the participants created 281 articles with a volume of 7,251,363 bytes which is a quite outstanding result. The three winners of the competition have received certificates and prizes from the Central Bank of the RA.


Presence of Museums in Wiki Projects

In line with the theme of International Museum Day 2023, together with the ICOM National Committee of Armenian Museums, Wikimedia Armenia Scientific-Educational NGO initiated an edit-a-thon competition on the topic of the "Presence of Museums in Wiki Projects" and a wiki training course. The contest lasted for two weeks - May 3-18 - with museums’ staff writing and improving articles about their museums and exhibits, while other participants translated articles from the lists provided beforehand. 15 participants who wanted to participate in the "Presence of Museums in Wiki Projects 2023" competition, but did not know how to edit Wikipedia, participated in an online wiki training while 10 participants joined the training course in person. Within two weeks, 24 participants, six of them representatives from museums, wrote 135 articles with a volume of 1,587,538 bytes. After summarizing the results, the participants will receive certificates, and the best five editors will receive awards from the ICOM National Committee of Armenian Museums.

CEE Spring 2023

On March 21, editors of Armenian Wikipedia actively joined the CEE Spring 2023 competition creating articles about the countries of the Central and Eastern European region. During the competition, choosing articles either from the list provided or according to their preference, 34 participants created 412 articles, with a volume of 6,367,902 bytes, on 23 different topics. One of the participants created 49 articles, another two created 42 articles each. The largest articles created by an Armenian participant within the framework of the competition is 119,100 bytes. The Armenian participants also created articles on topics concerning women - in total 67 articles. One of the participants alone wrote 20 articles on these topics. The competition lasted until May 31.

Wikiexcursion to Vayots Dzor

Opening of Jermuk Wikiclub

On May 20, Wikimedia Armenia organized a wiki excursion to Vayots Dzor Province. The excursion was the prize won by one of the groups participating in the Medical Wiki Gathering in January. The destination of the trip was decided by the participants through voting. Several options were presented to them and they decided to visit the south-eastern part of Armenia. During the excursion the participants visited Areni Wine Factory, Areni-1 Cave where the world’s oldest shoe was discovered, Gndevank, Noravank, Jermuk WaterFall and Kechut Reservoir. In total, there were 19 participants. During the wiki excursion the participants took pictures of the nature and surrounding historical-cultural monuments and sites.

Opening of Jermuk Wikiclub

Wikimedia Armenia always encourages and advocates the formation of Wikiclubs in different regions of Armenia. Due to these efforts, Wikimedia Armenia opened a Wikiclub in Jermuk on June 20. The space for the Wikiclub was provided by the Jermuk Youth Center. During the opening ceremony, President of Wikimedia Armenia Arshak Shahenyan talked about the importance of Wikiclubs in terms of both the expansion of Wikimovement in Armenia and establishment of scientific-educational center for settlement’s teenagers and the youth. Around 30 young people were present at the opening of the Wikiclub.

Wikiclubs’

In May the number of Wikiclubs in Armenia increased by one: on May 20, the formal opening ceremony of Jermuk Wikiclub took place in Jermuk, Vayots Dzor. The Wikiclub will start its activities in June. As of May 31, there are 123 registered members in 6 Wikiclubs (Goris, Ddmashen, Lernapat, Koghb, Hatsik, and Stepanakert). In May, 2023 Wikiclub members participated in the new project during which the materials of the encyclopedia "Armenian Typography and Book Art" (“Armenian Encyclopedia” Publishing House, 2015) released under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license were transferred to Armenian Wikipedia and wikified. Wikiclub members also created missing items of the corresponding pages in Wikidata, or linked the created articles to already existing items. Within the framework of this project, 167 articles with a total volume of 384,931 bytes were created in May. The project will continue in June, as well. The Wikiclub members participated in several projects in parallel - CEE Spring 2023, Presence of Museums in Wiki Projects 2023 and Financial-Economic Wiki Month 2023 - during which they created new articles. In the latter competition, User:Գոռ Մերի participant from Lernapat Wikiclub took the second place. Throughout May out of 123 Wikiclub members 60 contributed to Wikipedia. In total, they have created 330 articles and made 1,219 edits with a volume of 2,788,777 bytes. 15 of Wikiclub members contributed to Wikisource where they made 136 edits creating 31 pages and proofreading 22. Their contribution was 102,654 bytes.
