«Legislative Edit-a-thon»

Poster of the 1st «Legislative edit-a-thon».

Wikimedia Argentina, in collaboration with the Buenos Aires City Legislature, organized the first "Legislative Edit-a-thon", scheduled for Saturday, April 27. The main aim of the event is to enhance all content related to the history and patrimony of this public institution. For this purpose, many professionals that work in the Legislative Power were summoned to help other Wikipedians in the task of editing. This included the historian Héctor Daniel Vargas, a specialist in the life of Eva Perón, who used to have her office in the current Legislative Palace.

As part of the agreement, 85 images of this historic building were handed in by the institution and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

Over 45 people signed up for the event, a number which doubled the call for the first edit-a-thon held in Buenos Aires. However, the event had to be called off and rescheduled, for reasons that did not involve the organization of the event. Due to police repression at Hospital Borda an emergency session was held by the Legislative Power the same day the event was to take place. In conversation with our interlocutors inside the public organism, we decided to re-schedule the edit-a-thon for the last weekend of June.

GLAM-WIKI 2013 participation

The executive director of our chapter, Osmar Valdebenito, and the president of the board, Galileo Vidoni, took part, between April 13 and 15, of GLAM-WIKI 2013, the main event that gathers active participants of the Wikimedia movement and professionals of the cultural world (which includes Libraries, archives, museums and other institutions). The conference took place at the British Library in London, UK. The aim of this exchange is to be in the know of avant-garde practices in museology and archivism, participatory policies and use of new techlogies, in order to be able to work in concrete projects with cultural institutions in Argentina.

The event consisted of different presentations. The first day was open with a lecture by Michael Edson, New Media and Web Strategy Director at Smithsonian Institute, were he explained the relevance for cultural institutions in using new technologies to attract new public. Kat Walsh, president of the Wikimedia Foundation Board, and legal advisor for Creative Commons, introduced the progresses in the new set of licences 4.0. Furthermore, James Forester presented to the public the advances in the new "visual editor", one of the most dramatic changes for Wikipedia, that will be available during 2013. The second day of the conference was dedicated to different workshops that brought on discussions on how to improve new initiatives, such as the use of metrics, tool generation for massive file uploading and good practices in shaking deals with different institutions.

More about this event can be read in our blog.

Wikimedia Conference participation

Galileo Vidoni and Osmar Valdebenito giving a presentation on the chapters' progress in Milano.

As in every year, the different institutions that represent the Wikimedia movement gathered to discuss the general state of the movement, new initiatives that allow a better performance in each chapter and a further reach for our projects. It was the first time that Wikimedia Italia organized the event, in the city of Milano. Representing Argentina were Osmar Valdebenito and Galileo Vidoni.

The conference started, as usual, with a presentation of the state of the chapter during the passing year. Afterwards, different sessions were held with topics such as: Education programs, activities with cultural institutions, access to merit-based funds from Wikimedia Foundation, relationship with the volunteers' community, etc. The event also allowed to strengthen the bonds with Iberocoop chapters, by defining some aims for the meeting in Mexico this year, and proposing some projects of joint work.

FLISoL

On Saturday, April 27, the new edition of Latin American Festival of Free Software Installation was held. This event was held in Buenos Aires, in the Medrano campus of the National Technological University (UTN). Five of our associates took part of the event: Nicolás Giorgetti, Mariano Pérez, Ivana Molena, Osmar Valdebenito y Esteban Zárate.

The Wikimedia stand in the event allowed us to give some orientation to the participants as regards Wikipedia and new projects, like Wikidata. This participation also enabled contact exchange to develop new projects in the coming months, together with student groups related to the free software movement.

New Communications Manager

As part of the process of professionalization that Wikimedia Argentina has executed in the past year, our chapter has incorporated a second professional as part of the team. Since last April 1st, María Cruz is the new Communications Manager of Wikimedia Argentina. María has a BA in Communication with an emphasis in Journalism by UCA, and also studied philosophy and arts at European College of Liberal Arts in Berlin (now ECLA of Bard).

With this new team member, we hope to develop a new communication strategy that allows us to face communication to the general public as well as Internal Communication to our associates and the rest of the movement. In this first month we were able to improve our website by adding more information about our actions, to increase the number of entries in our blog (we are now publishing 2 to 3 news per week) and grow our community in the social network, generating more participation.

Budget from Wikimedia Foundation

By the end of April, the funds sent by the Wikimedia Foundation, according to the annual program for 2013 were finally accredited in the Association's account. These funds, that correspond to half of the annual budget, needed two months of constant paper work with tax authorities. These economic means will enable us to continue developing the projects we have commited our work to.
