Wiki Loves Monuments
Destacar el patrimonio cultural argentino a través de Wikipedia, el quinto sitio más visto del mundo, y recopilar miles de imágenes de los monumentos que existen en nuestro país fue el objetivo de Wiki Loves Monuments, el concurso fotográfico más grande del mundo y que se realizó por primera vez en la Argentina gracias a Wikimedia Argentina.
Tras finalizar el concurso, realizado durante todo el mes de septiembre, se inició la etapa de calificación de las imágenes para elegir a las 10 representantes de Argentina que participarán en la edición internacional de Wiki Loves Monuments y competirán con las seleccionadas de otros 34 países.
Una primera etapa de preselección dejó 985 imágenes del total de 6.034 imágenes particiantes, correspondientes a monumentos de todo el país. Tras ese filtro, las imágenes fueron evaluadas por el jurado compuesto por los fotógrafos argentinos Diego Eidelmann y Jorge Royán, el fotógrafo costarricense Jorge Albán, la wikipedista argentina Melisa Parisi y el wikipedista boliviano Erlan Vega. Los cinco jurados luego dirimieron entre las 28 fotografías con mejor evaluación en la etapa anterior y finalmente seleccionaron a las 10 mejores fotografías.
El jurado consideró una fotografía de las Islas Malvinas como la mejor del concurso. La imagen en blanco y negro del Cementerio Argentino en Puerto Darwin, fue capturada en 2007 por Tomás Terroba en uno de sus viajes a las islas, actualmente bajo ocupación británica. En dicho cementerio están sepultados 237 combatientes argentinos que murieron en la Guerra de las Malvinas realizada en 1982. Más de la mitad de los soldados enterrados allí no han sido identificados. La fotografía ganadora retrata no sólo la dureza de la geografía sino de la historia y nos recuerda uno de los episodios más tristes de la historia argentina.
El segundo lugar corresponde a “Atardecer en el Congreso de la Nación”, fotografiada por Miguel César, mientras el tercer lugar fue entregado a una fotografía nocturna del Planetario de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, tomada por Emmanuel Iarussi. Las diez fotografías ganadoras representan de forma diversa a todo el país: las provincias de Jujuy, Mendoza, Neuquén, San Juan, Santa Fe, Tierra del Fuego y Tucumán tienen una nominada, mientras 3 son de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.
Wikimedia Argentina organizará un evento especial para poder entregar los premios que corresponden a los ganadores dentro de las próximas semanas. Además, espera nuevamente realizar este concurso en 2013, aumentando el número de participantes y de monumentos fotografiados, fomentando a la difusión del patrimonio nacional y al desarrollo de la fotografía a nivel local.
Participación en el IV EBAM
Wikimedia Argentina y Wikimedia México participaron el pasado 2 de octubre en el IV Encuentro Latinoamericano de Bibliotecarios, Archivistas y Museólogos (EBAM). Este evento se realizó entre el 1 y el 3 de octubre en la Biblioteca Nacional de la República Argentina, en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.
Osmar Valdebenito, Director Ejecutivo de Wikimedia Argentina, y Carmen Alcázar, Directora de Proyectos de Wikimedia México, brindaron una presentación orientada a mostrar los beneficios de las iniciativas GLAM de Wikimedia para las instituciones de protección del patrimonio. En dicha presentación, Valdebenito recalcó la relevancia para bibliotecas, archivos, museos y otras instituciones de participar con los ciudadanos en la difusión del patrimonio, pues “el patrimonio es de todos y lo construimos entre todos”.
La presentación contó la experiencia de diversas instituciones de todo el mundo, pasando desde la Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional de Chile hasta el Museo Británico y el Archivo Nacional de los Estados Unidos, en cómo lograron realizar exitosos proyectos junto a voluntarios Wikimedia. Algunos de estos proyectos incluyeron concursos de edición de artículos de Wikipedia, publicación de imágenes en Wikimedia Commons y la digitalización de documentos originales en Wikisource.
La participación en este evento tuvo una gran recepción por parte de los asistentes, en su mayoría profesionales de varias instituciones culturales de América Latina y ya existen algunos contactos para desarrollar nuevos “proyectos GLAM”, en línea con los objetivos estratégicos de Wikimedia Argentina.
Nuevo sitio web
A mediados de octubre fue publicada la nueva página web de Wikimedia Argentina, con un nuevo diseño mucho más amigable. Al utilizar Wordpress como base, el sitio permitirá una actualización más sencilla y la capacidad de incorporar extensiones fácilmente. Dentro de las novedades se incluye la incorporación de la cuenta en Twitter y una versión móvil que permitirá una lectura más fácil a través de dispositivos portátiles como celulares y tablets.
El sitio web aún está en construcción y se espera que en las próximas semanas puedan ser incorporados los archivos históricos. Los sitios antiguos permanecen en http://wiki.wikimedia.org.ar y http://blog.wikimedia.org.ar.
Actividades en desarrollo
El próximo 17 de noviembre, de 10:00 a 18:00, se realizará un taller de edición de Wikipedia en el marco de Tecnoviembre, un evento organizado por el Centro Cultural Tierra Violeta, ubicado en Tacuarí 538. Este taller se da en el marco de los esfuerzos por la superación de la brecha de género existente en Wikipedia. Para participar en el evento, se solicita inscribirse en info

En la actualidad, existen avanzadas conversaciones para realizar una editatón en el Museo del Bicentenario, ubicado junto a Casa Rosada en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Este evento sería realizado tentativamente durante el mes de diciembre y contaría con el apoyo de los profesionales del museo, con el objetivo de mejorar los contenidos existentes en Wikipedia relativos a la historia del país. La fecha del evento será anunciada una vez estén definidos todos los detalles.
Durante el último mes también se han realizado diversas reuniones con el Programa de Digitalización de Museos de la Provincia de Buenos Aires para el desarrollo de proyectos conjuntos para la difusión del patrimonio cultural provincial a través de Wikipedia y sus proyectos hermanos. También se han realizado encuentros con los creadores de Wiludoki, una plataforma wiki en desarrollo para la difusión de la educación no formal, con el objetivo de apoyar el desarrollo de la plataforma y diseñar proyectos conjuntos de cooperación.

Wiki Loves Monuments
Highlight the Argentine cultural heritage through Wikipedia, the fifth most viewed site in the world, and collect thousands of images of the monuments that exist in our country was the main goal of Wiki Loves Monuments, the world's largest photo contest that was held for the first time in Argentina thanks to Wikimedia Argentina.
After the end of the contest, held during September, the qualification stage began to select the 10 Argentine representatives in the international edition of Wiki Loves Monuments, competing with other 34 countries.
An initial screening stage selected 985 images of the initial 6,034 particiantes images of monuments across the country. After this screening, the images were evaluated by the jury, composed by Argentinian photographers Diego Eidelmann and Jorge Royan, Costa Rican photographer Jorge Alban, Argentinian wikipedian Melissa Parisi and Bolivian wikipedian Erlan Vega. The five jurors selected between the 28 photographs with better evaluation in the previous stage and finally selected the 10 best photographs.
The jury found a photograph of the Malvinas Islands as the best of the competition. The B&W image of the Argentine Cemetery in Darwin, was captured in 2007 by Tomás Terroba on one of his trips to the islands, currently under British occupation. In this cemetery are buried 237 Argentine combatants killed in the 1982 Falklands War. Over half of the soldiers buried there have not been identified. The winning photograph portrays not only the hardness of geography but of history and reminds one of the saddest episodes in the Argentine history.
The second place went to “Sunset at the Argentine National Congress”, by Miguel César, while third place was awarded to a night shot of the Planetarium of Buenos Aires, taken by Emmanuel Iarussi. The complete list of nominees is available at our Wiki Loves Monuments blog.
The ten winning photographs variously represent the whole country: the provinces of Jujuy, Mendoza, Neuquén, San Juan, Santa Fe, Tierra del Fuego and Tucumán had one nominee, while three were from the City of Buenos Aires.
Wikimedia Argentina will organize a special event to deliver the prizes for the winners in the coming weeks. It also expects to repeat this contest in 2013, increasing the number of participants and photographed monuments, to promote the dissemination of national heritage and the local development of photography.
Participation at the 4th EBAM
Wikimedia Argentina and Wikimedia México participated past October 2 in the 4th Latin American Summit of Librarians, Archivist and Museologists (EBAM). This event took place between October 1-3 October in the National Library of Argentina, in the City of Buenos Aires.
Osmar Valdebenito, Executive Director of Wikimedia Argentina, and Carmen Alcazar, Project Manager of Wikimedia Mexico, gave a presentation to show the benefits of GLAM-Wikimedia cooperation initiatives for heritage and cultural institutions. In this presentation, Valdebenito emphasized the relevance for libraries, archives, museums and other institutions to engage with citizens in heritage difussion, because "heritage belongs to everyone and we built it together."
The presentation included the experience of various institutions around the world, from the Library of the Chilean Congress to the British Museum and the National Archives of the United States and how they managed to make successful projects with Wikimedia volunteers. Some of these projects included edit contest with Wikipedia articles, uploading images on Wikimedia Commons and scanning original documents for Wikisource.
Participation in this event was well received by the attendees, mostly professionals from various cultural institutions in Latin America and there are already some contacts to develop new "GLAM projects", in line with the strategic objectives of Wikimedia Argentina.
New website
In mid-October the new website of Wikimedia Argentina was made available, including a user-friendly design. By using Wordpress as base, the new site will allow easier updates and the inclusion of plug-ins. Among the new features include the addition of a Twitter widget and a mobile version that will allow easier reading through portable devices like smartphones and tablets.
The website is still under construction and is expected to be fully functional and including historical archives in the coming weeks. The old sites remain at http://blog.wikimedia.org.ar and http://wiki.wikimedia.org.ar.
Activities in development
On November 17, from 10:00 to 18:00, there will be a workshop about editing Wikipedia in Tecnoviembre, an event organized by the Cultural Center Tierra Violeta, located in Tacuarí 538, Buenos Aires. This workshop takes place in the framework of efforts to overcome the gender gap in Wikipedia. To participate in the event, registration is requested at infotierra-violeta.com.ar.
Currently, there are advanced talks for an edit-a-thon at the Bicentennial Museum, located next to Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires City. This event would be held tentatively in December and have the support of museum staff, with the aim of improving the content on Wikipedia on Argentine history. The date of the event will be announced once all the details are set.
In the last month there have also been a number of meetings with the Museums Digitization Program of the Province of Buenos Aires for the development of common projects for the dissemination of provincial cultural heritage through Wikipedia and its sister projects. There have also been meetings with the creators of Wiludoki, a wiki project under development for the dissemination of non-formal education, with the aim of supporting the platform creation and the design of joint cooperation projects.
