Defining quality in Wikimedia Commons edit

Defining a quality image uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by Wikimedians edit

Applies to: GLAM Program-Community Support Program

Defining a quality image uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by users
Key aspect Definition Defining quality through WMAR's point of view
Main aspects of an image uploaded Images/books main requirements Images/books are uploaded by a Wikimedia Commons's user
Images/books are uploaded under free licence.
Images/books must have a meaningful name
Images/books should be well categorized
An accurate description of the image is required
Neutrality in its description is mandatory
Images/books should respect Argentina policy regarding photograhps of identifiable people (in Argentina we do not need permission to take a picture of people in public spaces but we need permission to publish them). Argentina has freedom of panorama just for buildings
Authorship should be located in the image's description
Technical aspects Main technical aspects to approach to a quality image WMAR defines a quality images, those with at least 1280 x 960 of resolution. However this does not mean that WMAR will accept images with enough resolution to allow illustrate articles, particulary in cases where there are no alternative or replacement. Regarding these images, quality would be defined by the image's topic coverage.
To avoid unnecessary or inappropriate use of artistic filters and effects
Every important object on the picture should be sharp, considering the idea of the image
Images should be currently exposed
Topic coverage To define quality by covering a specific topic aligned with WMAR's main targets. WMAR will encourage the upload of images/books related to the cross-cutting strategic objetive of building a historical and cultural memory in Argentina, as per example:
Argentina's cultural heritage images/books
Argentina's ecological heritage
Argentina's historical heritage
Reconstruction of Argentina's memory and human rights
Another consideration of quality articles in GLAM program is defined by those improved by images/books from this cross-cutting topic
Pictures/images/documents/books uploaded should be relevant for Wikimedia Commons scope

Defining a quality image/documents uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by WMAR's digitizing program edit

Applies to: GLAM Program-Community Support Program

Defining a quality image/documents uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by WMAR's digitizing program
Key aspect Definition Defining quality through WMAR's point of view
Main aspects of an image uploaded Images main requirements Documents/Images/books are uploaded under free license ( the institutions provide the license to the material donated when necessary as mandatory).
As images/books uploaded by users, the institutions may upload the images, books and documents and give them a meaningful name
Images, books and documents should be well categorized
An accurate description of the images, books and documents is required
Neutrality is mandatory
Documents, images, books, copyrighted works etc. should respect Argentina's policy regarding public domain law (in Argentina copyrighted works, become public domain 70 years after the author's death or after 50 years if the author is unknown. Pictures are public domain after 25 years since taken and after 20 years since their first publication, according to law 11723)-
Authorship should be located in the image's description
Technical aspects Main technical aspects to approach to a quality image The colors of the image/document/art work/book etc. must be respected
We can adjust colors after scanning to make documents, images, art works etc. to look as similar as possible to the originals
To avoid unnecessary or inappropriate use of artistic filters and effects
Pictures with caption written in the same medium, it is better not to crop it, so that the information it may contain (original title, publisher, date, etc.) is immediately verifiable.
To adjust brightness and contrast in pictures, paintings or full colors works is recomended
Topic coverage To define quality by covering a specific topic aligned with WMAR's main targets. WMAR will encourage the upload of images/books/documents related to the cross-cutting strategic objetive of building a historical and cultural memory in Argentina, as per example: Argentina's cultural heritage images
Argentina's ecological heritage
Argentina's historical heritage
Reconstruction of Argentina's memory and human rights
Another consideration of quality articles in GLAM program is defined by those improved by images from this cross-cutting topic
Pictures/images/documents/books uploaded should be relevant for Wikimedia Commons scope. In particular, every picture/image/document/book etc. uploaded and supported by WMAR should be part of a campaign in Wikimedia Commons or relevant enough for any particular project carried out by WMAR or supported by WMAR
Community involvement Wikimedians or non wikimedians involved in the digitizing project. Cultural points (human resources) in cultural partners are mandatory
Technical resources are provide by the institutions along with WMAR when it is necessary
Volunteers can be involved in the digitizing project uploading material and improving it

Gender approach edit

Quality measurement in terms of gender approach edit

How we measure quality in terms of gender approach within an article?
Content
  • Title: To name a woman’s article by her maiden name and then clarify whether she acquired a married name in the article.
  • Women are not defined by their status as a male companion: the reference to being a woman, daughter, mother or wife may appear in the personal life section, but not necessarily in the introduction. Start introductions by describing her contributions, activities and achievements, not her gender, or family status.
  • Do not use the term "woman of", use "husband and wife" or "husband" or "partner" or "partners" according to the circumstances. You can say "is married to someone" instead of "is the wife of" because a woman does not belong to a man.
  • Do not give prominence to the civil status of the biographee. This data may be mentioned in the body of the article, as it is done in the biographies of men.
  • Do not use the term "female" in the description: eg female writer, women's writing.
  • Do not use nicknames as Amalita or Anita and name the biographee by his surname, as it is done in the biographies of men
Within the text
  • The article contains support visual materials where appropriate:Illustrations are encouraged, though not required
  • The article is suitably categorized: highly recommended
  • The article contains support visual materials where appropriate:Illustrations are encouraged and required

Human Rights and Argentine culture promotion approach edit

Quality measurement in terms of Human Rights and Argentine culture promotion edit

How we measure quality in terms of Human Rights and Argentine culture promotion?
Content

Human Rights

  • Introducing the historical context referring to the events as Crimes against Humanity in the first parragraph.
  • Referring to the period with categories like State terrorism, civil-military dictatorship, avoiding referring to the period with personal terminology that may lead to a bias affecting the content.
  • Using secondary sources that make reference to current research on the period. Using research done by Human Rights organizations as a frame.
  • Using primary sources that make reference to national trials and verdicts, governmental decisions, treaties in the frame of the international system of protection and promotion of Human Rights (UN and OAS)
  • In the case of biographies of Disappeared Detainees, one must refer to the person pointing out his/her participation in political organizations of the time without using words such as “subversive”, since that term was used by the civil-military dictatorship to condemn social activism.

Argentine culture promotion

  • Define the origin of the cultural tradition that is being described in the first paragraph.
  • If the articles are translated from the Spanish Wikipedia, maintain the nomenclature of origin.
  • Understand the term of culture as traditions, gastronomy and distinguished people from Argentine history.
  • If possible, avoid comparisons with other cultural tradition out of context
Within the text
  • The article contains support visual materials where appropriate:Illustrations are encouraged, though not required
