Abstract:
Disinformation on Wikipedia poses a significant threat to the dissemination of accurate information. Librarians, with their expertise in information evaluation and curation, are uniquely positioned to combat this issue. The training initiative equipped academic librarians in Gombe State with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute credible and reliable content to Wikipedia. Through hands-on workshops and mentorship, participants were taught of Wikipedia's editing policies and guidelines, as well as the tools and techniques for identifying and addressing misinformation. Participants were taught how to evaluate sources critically, distinguish between reliable and unreliable information, and effectively incorporate citations into their edits. Additionally, they were introduced to the concept of neutral point of view (NPOV), ensuring that their contributions were unbiased and objective.
One of the most significant outcomes of the training was a substantial increase in librarian participation in Wikimedia projects. Articles to work on were identified and participated were guided on how to improve them. Through their efforts, a total of 62 articles were significantly improved, with the addition of reliable references.
By empowering librarians to become active contributors of Wikimedia projects, we can collectively work towards a more informed and trustworthy online environment. This initiative demonstrates the vital role that librarians can play in safeguarding the integrity of Wikipedia and ensuring that it remains a reliable source of information for millions of users worldwide."
