Abstract
editThis lightning talk will be a short demo previewing funded work that seeks to leverage Structured Data on Commons to enable users on Wikipedia to add images using standardized templates that will automatically populate captions and/or citations. This project aims to improve both usability for editors and reliability for readers. This work evolves out of a longstanding proposal on the English Wikipedia (see w:Wikipedia:Image citation), which was adapted for a grant project from the Wikimedia Foundation, in which the Digital Public Library of America built prototypes which will be demonstrated in this lightning talk.
While the technology can only currently be viewed in Wikimedia Commons and can't be reproduced here, see prototypes here. After the initial tests were completed, this project has been provided additional funding by the SDAW project, and this talk will discuss the future plans. We are seeking interest from community members, especially those that do outreach and/or work with GLAM images, in order to document use cases, provide feedback on the prototypes, and join in bringing the effort to their language Wikipedia.
Expected outcomes
edit- Participants will learn about the image citation efforts and have understanding of the goals of the project
- Those interested in getting involved—e.g. providing user feedback, technical assistance, or making use of the project—will be given a way to stay in touch with the team and volunteer
