Wikimania bids are documents prepared by local volunteer groups, advocating that their city be chosen for an upcoming Wikimania conference. Each year, bids are solicited and reviewed by a Wikimania jury, which determines the winning bid – that is, the city that will host the following year's conference.

There is a guide to developing a bid in the Wikimania Handbook.

In 2017 the selection process changed: teams could apply through a simple expression of interest. The objective of this change was to avoid having teams competing one against the other, and to avoid having them investing a lot of time and effort in preparing the bid.

For 2020 it was decided to have Wikimania in Asia and the regional group ESEAP - Wikimedia East, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Regional Cooperation - was involved in the selection process of the location and in the implementation of Wikimania 2023. The involvement of regional networks appeared as a relevant new element of Wikimania.

After two virtual conferences in 2021 and 2022, in 2022 teams were invited to present expression of interest for 2024, 2025 and beyond. This approach allows to provide organisers with more time to prepare Wikimania. A new call for expressions of interest is expected to be launched in 2024-2025.
