Rio de Janeiro (/ˈhiw dʒi ʒʌˈnejɾu/ in Portuguese, /ˈriːoʊ di ʒəˈnɛroʊ/ in English), is the second biggest Brazilian city. The city is capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro. It was founded in 1565, was the capital of Brazil for almost two centuries — from 1763 to 1822 while it was a Portuguese colony and from 1822 to 1960 as an independent nation. It was the de facto capital of the Portuguese Empire from 1808 to 1821. Commonly known as just Rio, the city is also nicknamed A Cidade Maravilhosa ; "The Wonderful City".

This is not actually self-evalutation since I'm not a member of the team who would be involved in organizing a Wikimania in Rio de Janeiro, and for clarity I should point out that I'd be likely to be engaged in the competing Stockholm bid if there is one, but isn't it rather unlikely that the jury would want two consecutive Wikimania to be held in South America (i.e. 2009 in Buenos Aires as already decided, and then 2010 in Rio)? I'm certain Rio could be an excellent place for a Wikimania, but I'm not so certain 2010 would be a good year.

Before spending too much time planning a bid for Wikimania 2010, it might perhaps be better to consider this and have a word with the jury (next year's jury or a previous one) and, if they hesitate, perhaps plan a very solid bid for 2011, 2012 or even 2013 instead? - Kristo 21:41, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"I'm certain Rio could be an excellent place for a Wikimania, but I'm not so certain 2010 would be a good year." - I'm agree.
