Wikimania 2008/Bids/Atlanta/Meeting 9/6/07

[20:03] <Mike_H> ==Meeting logged frmo this point==
[20:03] <Mike_H> yay a typo
[20:03] <Niayre> ok -- Andrew and I walked around the student center today
[20:03] <Niayre> He took pictures of all the rooms
[20:03] <Niayre> and some of the open space
[20:04] <Niayre> I think we can use the 3rd floor quite well
[20:04] <CraigSpurrier> In the open space, is there a place we can set up a few computers for people to use?
[20:04] <Niayre> they've done some renovation and it looks better
[20:04] <Niayre> there is a computer lab
[20:04] <Niayre> i don't know if we can get access
[20:04] <LaMenta3> when did they do the rennovation of the 3rd floor rooms?
[20:05] <Niayre> they repainted and did a new wall since the last time i've been in here
[20:05] <LaMenta3> last time I was up there, which was less than a month ago, they still hadn't been redone
[20:05] <LaMenta3> maybe a couple of them had
[20:05] <Niayre> I think depending on where the press room is, we can put computers in a room up here
[20:05] <CraigSpurrier> access to a lab would be wonderful, though if we can find a place to setup 3-4 pcs that would be enough
[20:05] <LaMenta3> they repainted the hallway
[20:05] <Niayre> well maybe it's just been a while since i've been up here
[20:05] <Niayre> andrew has pictures
[20:06] <Niayre> I also talked to the international affairs student organization (IASO) people today
[20:06] <LaMenta3> I still think the meeting rooms in the commons are nicer
[20:06] <Niayre> they are interested in what we are doing
[20:06] <Niayre> they are nicer
[20:06] <Niayre> but they are too small
[20:06] <Niayre> there are two rooms that can fit 60
[20:06] <Niayre> and i think it's better to not have people trying to find crescent
[20:07] <Niayre> piedmont is far enough way considering where most of the event is
[20:07] <Niayre> but piedmont might be a good place for press
[20:07] <LaMenta3> perhaps
[20:07] <Niayre> and then we can put computers up in the 'board room' up here
[20:08] <Niayre> i'm currently sitting in room 301 :)
[20:08] <LaMenta3> weren't we discussing something about exhibitor tables at some point?
[20:08] <LaMenta3> well, we need a press room and then an interview/quiet room
[20:08] <CraigSpurrier> <nods> that is one sponsorship option
[20:08] <Niayre> i don't know about the discussion, but i thought that room 301 might work for exhibitor tables
[20:08] <Niayre> or again, piedmont
[20:09] <LaMenta3> piedmont has been used for exhibitors in the past
[20:09] <LaMenta3> and since it's got the one wall that's a window, it makes it extra visible
[20:09] <Niayre> i just really want to keep everything as close together as possible
[20:09] <LaMenta3> piedmont really isn't out of the way
[20:09] <Niayre> it's visible, but there aren't many people related to the conference down there
[20:09] * Disavian has joined #wikimania-atlanta
[20:09] <Niayre> how many panels do you want each day?
[20:09] <LaMenta3> not any more so than if you're in the theater and need to go to the third floor
[20:10] <Niayre> i think you and i should walk the building together sometime
[20:10] <Niayre> and that way we can talk more directly on the layout
[20:10] <LaMenta3> piedmont is next to a lot of the open/lounge space
[20:10] <Niayre> yeah
[20:10] <Niayre> i know where it is. it's very pretty :)
[20:10] <CraigSpurrier> Niayre: 2-3 panels a day
[20:11] <LaMenta3> and people would tend to browse that in their downtime when they'd be "lounging"
[20:11] <Niayre> that's it?
[20:11] <Disavian> copying the pics I took in the student center to my server...
[20:11] <Niayre> oh wow. we have plenty of room :)
[20:11] <Disavian> http://disavian.no-ip.info/share/Georgia%20Tech%20Campus/Student%20Center%20Walkthrough/
[20:11] <Niayre> i was thinking like 5 panels a day
[20:11] <CraigSpurrier> mostly we do birds of a feather or normal presentations
[20:11] <LaMenta3> there's nothing saying that we couldn't have 5 panels a day if we could find the presenters
[20:11] <CraigSpurrier> more panels would be good though
[20:12] <LaMenta3> what types of panels do they usually have?
[20:12] <Niayre> i was thinking that there would be 5 'panel' rooms running various panels throughout the day
[20:12] <CraigSpurrier> LaMenta3: all kinds of stuff :)
[20:13] <LaMenta3> example topics?
[20:13] <CraigSpurrier> I was on a Grass Root media one
[20:13] <Mike_H> So the "developments" today: The City of Atlanta needs a direct letter from Jimmy Wales if Shirley Franklin needs to be invited. They can't give us sponsorship nor will they forward us a list of their sponsors. The guy was quite frankly a little rude, and I didn't even ask for a list of their sponsors. And Coca-Cola's main office said to contact the local bottling plant for sponsorship opportunities and not the main company.
[20:14] <CraigSpurrier> there was an Election Panel, Stewards panel as well as several free content ones
[20:14] <LaMenta3> well geez...
[20:15] <Disavian> http://disavian.no-ip.info/share/Georgia%20Tech%20Campus/Student%20Center%20Walkthrough/IMG_4633.jpg is a decent example of a panel room
[20:15] <Disavian> it'd be set up differently, tho.
[20:15] <LaMenta3> so in theory we could have a panel about translating or some of the other difficult yet thankless tasks that people bond over
[20:15] <Mike_H> So that "enthusiasm" from the City of Atlanta? Well, if this guy is any indication, they clearly don't give a crap. He was horribly rude.
[20:16] <Niayre> andrew -- you have some random pictures of tech square at the end
[20:16] <Niayre> or what i think is tech square
[20:16] <LaMenta3> I guess they have nicened them up a bit
[20:16] <Disavian> yeah, I went to Tech Square after I left you
[20:17] <Disavian> to spend some time studying for my test tomorrow
[20:17] <LaMenta3> I just remember the one that's behind the bathrooms as still being kind of dismal
[20:17] <LaMenta3> which is a bummer because it's big
[20:17] <Disavian> fun pic: http://disavian.no-ip.info/share/Georgia%20Tech%20Campus/Student%20Center%20Walkthrough/IMG_4656.jpg
[20:17] <Disavian> prayer carpet area thingy
[20:17] <Niayre> it's the prayer area maintained by the muslim student organization
[20:17] <Niayre> it's right off the third floor
[20:18] <LaMenta3> I always forget about that
[20:18] <LaMenta3> but it *is* a nice thing to have there
[20:18] <Mike_H> Jessica, so we can get the rooms on August 3?
[20:18] <Mike_H> I just read your google document
[20:18] <kylu> ... what?
[20:19] <kylu> erk, sorry, different jess. c.c;;
[20:19] <Niayre> I did not talk to them directly. that is what i want to propose.
[20:19] <Niayre> well i didn't talk to them directly today
[20:19] <Niayre> i've spoken with them in the past
[20:20] <Niayre> I really need to have a student org with me while I do it
[20:20] <Mike_H> yeah
[20:20] <Mike_H> I wish I could help you there, but I don't go there
[20:21] <Niayre> technically neither do i since I graduated in december
[20:21] <Niayre> but if someone can put together a short proposal that i can give to IASO, they may be interested in being our sponsor
[20:21] <Niayre> basically - who we are, what we are doing, what we want the conference to be
[20:22] <LaMenta3> I'm not affiliated with any organizations that could "sponsor" us in that regard
[20:22] <Niayre> but do you know anyone that might be?
[20:22] <Niayre> anyone over in CS?
[20:22] <Niayre> i mean, IASO is a bit of a stretch
[20:22] <LaMenta3> If the Technique did it, then they couldn't cover the event. COI. How ironic.
[20:22] <LaMenta3> hmm...
[20:22] <LaMenta3> I'm only a CS minor
[20:22] <Disavian> blueprint?
[20:22] <Niayre> or a departmental sponsor
[20:23] <LaMenta3> the school of public policy might have an interest...
[20:23] <LaMenta3> there are professors who do research in things like media participation and the like
[20:23] * Majorly_away is now known as rofl_monkeyz
[20:24] <Disavian> rofl_monkeyz...?
[20:24] <LaMenta3> I wouldn't exactly know how to pitch it to them, though. I've never been too good at that
[20:24] * rofl_monkeyz is now known as Majorly
[20:24] <Niayre> if someone can get the material together, i can talk to them with you
[20:25] <Mike_H> Jessica, I can write up what you asked me for before
[20:25] <Mike_H> the what we are, what we do, what the goal is thing
[20:25] <LaMenta3> Most of my good departmental contacts in SPP have left, unfortunately :(
[20:26] <Niayre> ok -- i've given yall what i have. i'm getting in alot of trouble for not paying attnetion to the rehearsal. i will leave aim open. and i'll check the log when i can. i will talk to yall later
[20:27] * Niayre has quit IRC
[20:27] <LaMenta3> yeah, so Mike...if you can put that stuff together I suppose I can try to broach the subject to someone in my school
[20:28] <LaMenta3> I can't promise much...the faculty have this tendency of brushing me off.
[20:28] <Mike_H> Okay, is that all I need to do?
[20:28] <Mike_H> Is there anything else I need to write?
[20:29] <LaMenta3> anything that you feel would help us kiss potential sponsors' butts better
[20:30] <Mike_H> okay
[20:30] <Mike_H> I moved "Southeast team" under the first mention of our team names
[20:30] <LaMenta3> 'cos...and don't take this the wrong way, but...you're like, our butt-kisser-in-chief here.
[20:30] <Mike_H> and moved the bid team link under that
[20:30] <Mike_H> and moved the long "this IRC meeting had so and so people..." to another page
[20:30] <LaMenta3> yeah I saw that
[20:30] <LaMenta3> I like it better up there
[20:30] <LaMenta3> makes us more transparent...or something
[20:32] <Mike_H> okay
[20:32] <Mike_H> and I added a long paragraph under "safety and security"
[20:36] <LaMenta3> I like that, Mike
[20:36] <LaMenta3> it's good
[20:37] <LaMenta3> although, "People of all beliefs, races, and orientations" makes me think of welcoming upside-down and sideways people ;)
[20:37] <LaMenta3> but I think that's because I'm tired
[20:39] <Mike_H> I wanted to think of a nice way of saying it without naming certain things
[20:39] <Mike_H> like Muslims
[20:39] <Mike_H> or transsexuals
[20:39] <Mike_H> or something
[20:39] * NotASpy has quit IRC (Nick collision from services.)
[20:39] <LaMenta3> I know, but it always me think of "orientation" in a spacial sense
[20:40] * NotASpy_ has joined #wikimania-atlanta
[20:40] * NotASpy_ is now known as NotASpy
[20:40] <LaMenta3> *always makes me...
[20:40] <LaMenta3> I keep dropping words
[20:40] <CraigSpurrier> I have to go, talk to you all later
[20:40] * CraigSpurrier is now known as CraigSpurrier_aw
[20:42] <Mike_H> hm, what else is there
[20:42] <Mike_H> oh, I researched bars in Midtown
[20:42] <Mike_H> there are 76.
[20:42] <Mike_H> I really do not want to make that list
[20:43] <Disavian> 76? whoa.
[20:43] <LaMenta3> this is relevant to my interests :p
[20:44] <LaMenta3> do you have the information for all 76?
[20:44] <Mike_H> yeah, let me link
[20:44] <LaMenta3> at the very least, name, address and/or phone#
[20:45] <kylu> and # of closest police precinct
[20:45] <Mike_H> http://search.cityguide.aol.com/atlanta/visitorsguide/search.adp?type=venue&vtid=47&stid=&town=1167&page=listingsLong
[20:45] <LaMenta3> in relation to the bars? I don't think you'd need that.
[20:45] <Mike_H> and that's like every genre of bar
[20:46] <LaMenta3> loading...
[20:47] <LaMenta3> you searched within 25 miles
[20:48] <LaMenta3> though if you search within 5 miles it only goes down to 73, lol
[20:48] <Mike_H> I didn't search within 25 miles
[20:48] <Mike_H> I searched within neighborhoods
[20:48] <Mike_H> I selected "Midtown"
[20:48] <LaMenta3> ah
[20:49] <LaMenta3> if you search within 5 miles of ZIP 30332 (Georgia Tech), you get 13
[20:50] <LaMenta3> no, wait...it did odd things
[20:52] <Mike_H> hm
[20:53] <LaMenta3> nevermind
[20:53] <LaMenta3> apparently you can't search bars specifically within a distance of a zip code
[20:53] <LaMenta3> and the 76 that you got are only in midtown and don't count the ones in buckhead or highlands
[20:53] <Mike_H> ...yeah.
[20:54] <Mike_H> I was looking for Midtown first.
[20:54] <Mike_H> Let's be honest here, how many foreigners are actually going to trek on MARTA, no less, all the way to Buckhead?
[20:54] <LaMenta3> it depends on the foreigner
[20:54] <Mike_H> they can't get back!
[20:54] <Mike_H> bars close at 2:30
[20:56] <LaMenta3> who says that they have to take marta, though
[20:56] <LaMenta3> and even discounting buckhead, since most of the bars there closed, there's still highlands which is pretty nearby (not walking distance, but still optionable) as well as L5P
[20:57] <Mike_H> I'm just saying, there are a lot of things I will personally write and do
[20:57] <Mike_H> and that is simply too much work for me.
[20:57] <Mike_H> Someone else needs to do it.
[20:57] <LaMenta3> I understand
[20:58] <LaMenta3> I can filter through the results, as not all of the bars that are on that list are probably worth going to
[20:58] <Mike_H> mm
[21:00] <LaMenta3> well anyway, I really need to go make that grocery run
[21:00] <LaMenta3> is there anything else pressing?
[21:01] <LaMenta3> guess not
[21:08] <Mike_H> sorry
[21:08] <Mike_H> I had to use the bathroom
[21:09] <Mike_H> oh, are you still there?
[21:10] <Mike_H> hm
[21:10] <Mike_H> meeting closed
[21:10] <Mike_H> ==logging over==
