Wikimania05/Introduction

Dear Reader,

You are currently looking at the Proceedings of Wikimania 2005, the first international wikimedia congress. Wikimania included three days of presentations, workshops, and discussions about wikis, wiki communities, Wikimedia projects, free content and copyright, global communication, and collaboration in general.

The final programme included 11 workshops, 4 keynotes, 55 presentations, and 7 poster exhibits.

Additionally: hacking-days with some presentations und fruitful discussion.

Some speakers with interesting submissions were unfortunately not able to participate in the conference - we include 10 additional papers from their pens. 26 of the 55 presentations also have a detailed paper - presentations in pdf format are available for a dozen of them. Sessions in the two larger rooms were recorded; so you will find links to those recordings from the presentations held there (16 presentations and 3 keynotes).

382 Teilnehmer waren aus 50 Ländern rund um den Globus nach Frankfurt ins Haus der Jugend gekommen, um sich das reichhaltiges Programm von über 60 Vorträgen anzuhören und gemeinsam über Wikimedia, Wikipedia und die Übernahme der Weltherrschaft zu philosophieren.

Vor allem in Deutschland, aber auch in anderen Ländern traf die Konferenz auf ein reges Medieninteresse. So wurde über die Konferenz u.a. in der ARD, ZDF, RTL, N24, N-TV und 3SAT berichtet, in allen großen deutschen Zeitungen erschienen Reportagen über die Wikimania, aber auch vom englischen Guardian und sogar vom australischen Sydney Morning Herald waren Reporter präsent. Insgesamt tummelten sich über 100 Journalisten vor Ort, um Teilnehmer zu interviewen.

Der Ruf nach einer Fortsetzung im nächsten Jahr wurde bereits während der Wikimania laut und auf Meta-Wiki konkretisieren sich die Planungen für die nächste Konferenz. Die Stadt wird wie letztes Jahr in einer Ausschreibung ausgewählt werden, zu der diesmal Vorschläge aus allen Kontinenten eingereicht werden können. Besonder engagiert sind diesmal die Briten, die schon mehrere Städte ausgewählt haben und sich nach einer geeigneten Location umhören. Der City-Contest wird am 1. September starten, eine Jury aus Mitgliedern des Boards und des Organisationsteams wird die Vorschläge bewerten.

Andere sind derweil noch mit Aufarbeiten der vergangenen Wikimania beschäftigt. Über 500 Fotos sind mittlerweile auf Flickr hochgeladen worden und das Technik-Team um Martin Mai und Zeno Gantner ist eifrig dabei, die Videoaufnahmen der Konferenz zu enkodieren.

382 participants from approximately 50 countries around the globe came to Frankfurt and the "Haus der Jugend," to listen to a rich program of over 60 lectures and to philosophize together about Wikimedia, Wikipedia, and their ascent toward world domination.

News media (particularly in Germany, but also in other countries) took an active interest in the conference. Thus the conference was featured in ARD, ZDF, RTL, N24, N-TV, and 3SAT. All large German newspapers published reports about Wikimania. In addition, the English Guardian and even the Australian Sydney Morning Herald had reporters present. More than 100 journalists in all showed up to interview participants.

Planning for a conference next year began already during this Wikimania, and continues now in Meta Wiki. The city will be selected (as it was last year) via an announcement, to which nominations can be submitted from all continents. This time the British are especially engaged, having already selected several cities and begun the search for a suitable location. The City-Contest will start on 1 September; a jury made up of board members and the organization team will evaluate nominations.

Meanwhile, others are still busy with the regenerating of the past Wikimania. Over 500 photos have been posted to Flickr, and the technical team of Martin Mai and Zeno Gantner are about to encode the videos of the conference.
