I've been working on a model for a social memory platform augmented by a cyberneticly linked social network. This system is able to resolve a single, cohesive pattern of memory from the minds of an entire userbase. This model attempts to extrapolate the long-term/short-term memory processes shared by the mind and computer chip onto a social network. It manifests as a self-organizing encyclopedia of public opinion capable of generating and presenting the most relevant information to a user for any subject, as dictated by the previously recorded bias of the population.
One of the applications of this platform is a new method of collaboratively editing academic articles. It allows a group of individuals to collaboratively assemble information via a voting system. For instance, it would allow the entire MIT engineering department, faculty, students and all, to pick apart a manuscript one detail at at time and then debate if they think those details need to be fixed. After debate, the entire group votes for whether or not the detail needs to be changed. Once it is processed, the manuscript would be (statistically speaking) the closest thing possible to agreeing with the cognative opinions of every single person involved.
