Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

The WikiCite for Librarians: Interactive Learning Pathways for Information Professionals project met and exceeded its intended goals. As promised, the project participants developed an open educational resource for learning Wikidata using Twine. The team scripted, produced, and transcribed sixty videos (twenty videos each in Chinese, English, and Spanish). We also commissioned a series of French language videos, which are currently in production. The open educational resource is now publicly available at LearnWikidata.net.

Outcome

edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Produce a series of multimedia learning pathways using Twine Completed See LearnWikidata.net and Commons:Category:Learn Wikidata videos by the Vanderbilt Libraries
Multimedia modules will be recorded and captioned in English, Chinese, and Spanish We produed sixty multimedia modules for the project. We decided that it would not be sufficient to record screencasts in English, and then just caption them in Chinese and Spanish. We needed to localize the presentation, using the different language interfaces for Wikidata. In the end, we created sixty distinct videos (twenty per language) rather than the twenty videos we promised in the initial proposal.

Lessons learned

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well? After the initial planning period, the project participants developed an efficient workflow for producing these multimedia assets. We managed to produce three videos per week: one video for each of the target languages of the project. The use of Adobe Creative Cloud allowed us to pass assets seamlessly among team members.
  • What did not work so well? Initially, we faced difficulty setting up Twine to match our goals. But we overcame the technical obstacles by learning more about its technical architecture and by strategic outsourcing of some aspects of its web design. For a more granular look at the issues we faced during the production of the multimedia assets, please consult the issues on our Github repository.
  • What would you do differently next time? I do not believe that we would do anything differently. At this point, we feel like we developed an efficient process for producing multimedia videos. The use of Adobe Character Animator, in particular, helped us to maintain a uniform look and feel across the language editions.
