Wiki in School Nigeria Program
- Background to the Programme
Eight out of every ten Nigerian lecturers are Wikipedia users who want to learn how to contribute to the platform. And subsequently, pass on the experience to their students. Therefore, this program is designed to identify Nigerian lecturers willing to learn about the product and impart knowledge to their students in a classroom setting.
Overview of the Program
edit- Three lecturers from Nigerian tertiary institutions are selected and undergo Wikipedia training (in person) for three days.
- After the three-day training, the lecturers will identify ten students from their institution participating in a month-long training with a strong mentoring component.
- The three lecturers will focus on three courses (one course per lecturer). e.g., sciences, social studies, art and entertainment, and technology.
- The lecturers will assign articles to participating students using the Wikimedia Outreach Dashboard and review their work when completed.
- The students will engage one another in a joint review of topics, and marks are awarded to students (or groups of students) based on their different outcomes.
- The students are awarded marks based on the article created or improved based on the period under review.
- We will evaluate the lessons learned for further improvement of the project.
Program Objectives/Scope
editThe program's simple injective is to empower selected cohort of academicians to guide their students to contribute to Wikipedia as an exercise in developing 21st-century skills. And by the end of this program, three selected lecturers from Nigeria will be able to guide their students to contribute academic content to Wikipedia while developing their collaboration and research skills.
Application requirments
edit- Interested applicants must be academic staff or faculty members of a tertiary institution in Nigeria.
- Interested academic staff or faculty members should submit an application (or letter of interest) to Wikimedia UG Nigeria via info@wikimedia.org.ng.
- The interested academic staff or faculty member must agree to commit at least 5 hours per week to mentoring their students for the duration of the program.
- Applicants will go through an interview session before their final selection. While they will receive stipends to support the project for the duration of the pro- gram.
- The Wikimedia UG Nigeria will issue certificates to successful students (mentees) and Lecturers (mentors).
- Successful applicants will visit Lagos for the training.
- Prior Wikipedia knowledge could be an advantage but is not compulsory.
Application is open on the 12th of December 2022 and closes 24th of December, 2022.
