Nepal is a small but socially and biologically diverse country. Its landscapes range from 60 meters above sea level to the top of the world. This makes Nepal rich in biodiversity. The dramatic differences in elevation found in Nepal result in a variety of bio-mes, from tropical savannas along the Indian border to subtropical broad-leaf, and coniferous forests in the Hill Region, to temperate broad-leaf and coniferous forests on the slopes of the Himalaya, to montane grasslands and shrub-lands and rock and ice at the highest elevations. It is also the home for animals and birds that are found in tropical to tundra regions. According to the 2011 census, 123 different languages are spoken in Nepal. The cultural heritage of Nepal has evolved over the centuries. This multi-dimensional heritage bounds the diversities of Nepal's ethnic, tribal, and social groups, and it expresses in music and dance; art and craft; folklore and folktales; languages and literature; philosophy and religions; festivals and celebration; foods and drinks.
