Wiki Loves Folklore 2024 in Palestine
Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photographic competition to enjoy and celebrate the cultural diversity from around the World through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons). Everybody can participate.
Feminism and Folklore is an international writing contest organized at Wikipedia annually in the month of February and March to document folk cultures and women in folklore in different regions of the world on Wikipedia. This project is the Wikipedia edition of the photography campaign Wiki Loves Folklore (WLF) that is organized on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore traditions around the world. The basic aim of the competition is to collect articles on human cultural diversity in the worldwide free encyclopedia Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. This year we focus on folk culture around the globe, with a particular attention to closing the gender gap, as we are partnering with other affiliates and groups across the world.
Organizing Wiki Loves Folklore 2024 in Palestine is a significant opportunity to highlight the importance of cultural diversity and representation, especially for underrepresented communities. This competition plays a crucial role in giving a platform to marginalized groups, allowing them to share their folklore, traditions, and heritage with the world through the Wikimedia projects. Wiki Loves Folklore not only promotes cultural exchange and understanding but also contributes to the enrichment of Wikimedia platforms with valuable content that might otherwise be overlooked. By encouraging participation from diverse communities, the competition helps in creating a more inclusive and comprehensive representation of global cultural heritage on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. In the context of Palestine, where cultural heritage is rich and diverse, organizing Wiki Loves Folklore can serve as a means to preserve and document traditional knowledge and practices that are at risk of being lost or forgotten. It empowers individuals to contribute to the digital archive of human culture and history, ensuring that their stories and traditions are preserved for future generations and shared with a global audience.
By engaging participants from various backgrounds and communities in Palestine, Wiki Loves Folklore can foster a sense of pride in cultural identity, stimulate creativity, and strengthen connections between different groups. This initiative not only celebrates the unique cultural heritage of Palestine but also aligns with the broader mission of Wikimedia in promoting free knowledge and fostering a more inclusive and diverse online community.
