Wiki From Above satellite proposal

This is a proposal to fund the commissioning of satellite aerial photographs to be uploaded to Commons for use on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. With the current declining cost in commissioning satellite photographs it is becoming increasingly economically feasible for public benefit free knowledge movements like the Wikimedia Movement to commission such images for use on Wikipedia. A system that allows entities funding the procurement of such images to evaluate the cost-benefit to the public of spending money on this is needed.

The community has limited financial means and so only images that will be used on high interest topics on Wikimedia projects can be feasibly procured. The same is true of the use of such images on relevent Wikimedia project pages (like Wikipedia). Images will need to be used in a significant and meaningful way that will greatly improve the quality, usability, and relevance of the article in question by the reading public.

What is meant by this is illustrated in the examples below.

Notable locations edit

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens example edit

The English language version of the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden Wikipedia page is visited by around 1,800 people a month. It is a much loved and highly notable location in Cape Town, South Africa and its article page on Wikipedia is aviable in 10 languages as of writing this (16 July 2020). There are many botanical gardens like it and many that have much higher page viewership numbers (such as the Los Angeles Arboretum). In this way this example is typical of this type of satellite base aerial image need on Wikipedia.
