[6][7] There are 3 articles about women's basketball teams in this country on French Wikipedia. There are 12 articles about women's basketball teams in this country on Japanese Wikipedia. In December 2011, according to Alexa, Wikinews was ranked the 33,507th most popular site in the country.[8] A December 2011 search on English Wikinews for Women Japan found 4 articles that mentioned both words.[9] A December 2011 search on Spanish Wikinews for Japón mujeres found 25 articles that mentioned both words.[10]
In December 2011, according to Alexa, Wikibooks was ranked the 2,938th most popular site in the country.[11] On Japanese Wikibooks, 117 users made at least 1 edit and 34 users made at least 5 edits. Of the eight users who can be identified by gender, all are male.[12]
On Japanese Wiktionary, 1,975 users made at least 1 edit and 643 users made at least 5 edits. 196 users explicitly set their gender on Japanese Wiktionary: 175 or 89.29% are male and 21 or 10.71% are female.[13]

Prior to 19th century, Japanese women were traditionally subjected to patrilineal system and taught to obey the male. Some of the traditions still apply recent days, for example the use of onnarashii (女らしい) as proper behavior for ladies speech. Japanese ladies should use polite and deferential forms of speech more frequently than men and also use grammatical feminine forms.
Feminism movement in Japan political area was started in 1919 through the establishment of women association which addressed the needs of women rights and protection. Literature plays important role in the beginning of Japanese women's self awareness, especially through women's struggle stories against traditional norm. The Women’s Suffrage Movement of Japan finally granted a right to vote in 1946 and also resulted gender equity law in 1986.

During the December 2011 fundraising appeal, no Japan, men or women, were featured are part of the appeal. During the 2011 Summer of Research, the WMF hired eight research fellows. Of these, only one was female, and she was from the United States. There were four males from American universities, The other researchers included men from a Japanese university, a Swiss university and a Canadian university. There were no female research fellows from this country.
