The official languages of Finland are Finnish (Suomi) and Swedish. Finnish is the main language of 91% population, while Swedish is spoken by 5.4% of population in Finland. The other minor languages in this country are Sami, Romani, Finnish Sign Language and the Karelian.

In December 2011, Wikipedia is one of the most popular sites in Finland, ranked 6th according to Alexa.[2] In the same period, Suomi language Wikipedia ranked 17th out of 280 Wikipedias in the world, with 97 very active Wikipedians and 580 active contributors.[3][4] In December 2011, there were 5,460 people and 2,260 women of all ages from Finland who were interested in Wikipedia.[5] On English Wikipedia, there are 1 article about a roller derby league from this country. There are 2 articles about women's association football clubs in this country on English Wikipedia. There are 22 articles about models from this country on English Wikipedia. In December 2011, elections were held for English Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee.

There are no female administrators on English wikinews from this country, nor are there any women from this country who are English wikinews accredited reporters. On Portuguese Wikinews, there are no women active from this country. This may be a result of several factors, including the language and because Portuguese Wikinews only has an active editing community of five people, one of whom is a woman. A December 2011 search on English Wikinews for Women Finland found 18 articles that mentioned both words.[6] A December 2011 search on Spanish Wikinews for Finlandia mujeres found 4 articles that mentioned both words.[7] A December 2011 search on Portuguese Wikinews for mulheres Finlândia found 3 articles that mentioned both words.[8]

During the December 2011 fundraising appeal, no Finns, men or women, were featured are part of the appeal. During the 2011 Summer of Research, the WMF hired eight research fellows. Of these, only one was female, and she was from the United States. There were four males from American universities, The other researchers included men from a Japanese university, a Swiss university and a Canadian university. There were no research fellows, male or female, from this country.
