WikiIndaba conference 2021/Olugold/Report

A summary of my WikiIndaba 2021 experience.

Sessions attended edit

Some of the sessions attended were amongst others:

  • Pre-conference sessions
  • State of Wikimedia in Africa
  • A session by Bukola (Libraries in Ekiti)
  • Wikipedia in African Libraries: the network was not favourable, so Dr Nkem sent out her presentations through Whatsapp.
  • Wikimedia Lexicography: the session clashed with the other session I was interested in. Though I attended for a while.
  • Online Security
  • Meeting with the new CEE, Maryana Iskander, etc.

New Networks made edit

Most if the new contact was through the WikiIndaba telegram group. I always contanted Amina Lukanza for enquiries, help and suggestions. I really appreciated her swift feedbacks.

Learning Pattern edit

A lot of new things were learnt from experience editors. Some are security consciousness, tips on securing online accounts, etc.

Challenges and Recommendation edit

Networking connectivity. I appreciated the uploads via youtube, that was how I viewed some of the sessions I missed due to network failure.

I missed some of the sessions due to a faulty computer and since some sessions could only be viewed on a computer. Though I later found a way to use my phone irrespective of the challenges.

Outcome edit

The experience was an unforgettable one the willigness of Africans to get involved was encouraging. The new users were not left out. New users kept indicating interest via the telegram group, even after the conference. Above all, was a better understanding of how Wikimedia works. I look forward to another African Wikimedia Conference 2022. Thank you all!
