Abstract:

Much of Africa’s literature remains invisible globally as its metadata is not included in library catalogues and Wikidata. This applies f.e. to the vast amount of novels and short stories published in newspapers and magazines, and more recently, on Facebook and other online platforms.

This workshop demonstrates how this missing data could be collected in a spreadsheet, cleaned up in OpenRefine and finally uploaded to Wikidata. The workshop focuses on novels and short stories published in African magazines and newspapers in the 1960s and 1970s.

Audience : Some basic familiarity with Wikidata is needed. Attendees who want to join the editing exercises should already have installed OpenRefine on their laptop. (https://openrefine.org/docs/manual/installing)
