Abstract:

Film and awards tables are among the essential contributions of film and television articles on Wikipedia. They provide polish and structure and a user-friendly visual representation of a film professional’s body of work. Yet, the AfroCreatives WikiProject +film discovered that a good number of African film and television-related articles on Wikipedia do not have filmography or awards tables. Filmography and awards are instead mostly contributed as lists. This is likely in large part because editors are not familiar with how to make this contribution.

As part of ACWP’s efforts to enhance film and TV articles, we included instruction on how to add these tables as part of the training offered during the 2024 AfroCreatives FESPACO Edit-a-thon campaign.

We believe offering a focused workshop at the 2024 WikiIndaba Conference on how to contribute Filmography and Awards tables would be of impact and interest. In addition to providing hands-on practical knowledge on how to make an essential film and television-related contribution, the participating community will make a notable impact toward enhancing African film and television articles in a short period.

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region?

This workshop will provide the opportunity for attendees to improve their Wikipedia editing skills which they can in turn share with their local communities — a valuable effort towards encouraging capacity building in the African Wikimedia communities.

On a practical level, attendees will help to improve the representation of African film and television on Wikipedia , and moreover, will be encouraged to have national drives after the conference focused on their various national film and television industries.
