This session aims at describing what has been done in a local community in empowering young girls on the opportunities and importance of Open Educational Resources while in school or preparing for the University, by learning how to use Wikipedia, and contributing to its sister projects like Wikidata, Commons etc. |

Extra information: The session will present a lightning talk aims at sharing how to consistently empower the youth, specifically young women/girls aged 13 -21 years on the importance and benefits of using Open Educational Resources while in school or preparing for the University. It will also address how to ensure active and effective contribution of young girls in rural and developing communities to bridge the knowledge gap on WikiData and also use wikipedia as a research tool to curb misinformation.
It will also explore specific tools of interest such as WikiData and Wikipedia that have helped shape their contributions even at a younger age. Additionally, it will look at presenting some pros and cons on strategies which need to be adopted and securing partnerships which helps in promoting a sustainable project. - Etherpad | |||
How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region?
It's benefits to Indaba is in relation to the areas of diversity and collaboration where the participants will gain knowledge on how new editors from (Public school ) in deprived communities can gain digital skills to increase their research skills at a very young age. It will also highlight how we can collaboratively reduce the gender gap by WikiData items and linked open data The following are the outcomes estimated from the presentation
