Description

edit

Please add description of the request, with all the necessary details.

The Wikimedia Gombe Network, an affiliate of Wikimedia Nigeria, is eager to host a Wiki Indaba 2023 satellite conference from November 3-5, 2023. Our goal is to empower Africa through knowledge sharing and collaboration, aligning with this year's theme "Tweeza."

We plan to host a 3-day conference at Resource Center in Gombe, open to Wikimedians and knowledge advocates across Nigeria and Africa. The event will feature presentations, workshops, networking, and knowledge sharing focused on advancing free and open access to information.

Topics will include open licensing, digitization initiatives, overcoming knowledge gaps, building contributor communities, and best practices for Wikimedia projects. We aim to generate solutions to information barriers facing African communities.

With sponsorship from Wikimedia affiliates and local academic/cultural institutions, we will provide a venue, equipment, meals, and travel support for a target of [number] in-person and remote participants. Professionals, students, and community members engaged in education, tech, libraries, GLAM, and volunteer initiatives are encouraged to attend.

By hosting this inclusive conference, we hope to strengthen ties between African Wikimedians, empower local communities through skill-sharing, identify knowledge gaps, and increase access to free knowledge. We are committed to making the 2023 Wiki Indaba as enriching, collaborative, and inspiring as possible.

The Wikimedia Gombe Network also plans to have representatives join the Wiki Indaba 2023 opening and closing ceremonies virtually. This will allow our local conference to connect with the broader Indaba event and community.

For the opening ceremony, we will set up a livestream viewing for our in-person attendees and online participants. During the closing ceremony, we will have a group video call to see the highlights and join in the spirit of collaboration.

Our goal is to integrate our local conference as much as possible with the overall Wiki Indaba through active virtual participation. By tuning into the main presentations and discussions, we hope to gain insights to bring back to our community in Gombe. We aim to share key takeaways during our satellite event.

Joining remotely will also allow us to showcase our local conference and Nigerian community to the wider Wiki Indaba audience. We are excited to connect with Wikimedians across Africa and convey our region's energy, ideas, and commitment to sharing open knowledge.

Outcomes

edit

Please provide a range or estimate for the number of participants the funding will support.

The funding will provide support for 30 members of our local community to fully participate in the event. This will cover costs such as venue rental, Internet data, promotional materials, and light refreshments to remove barriers and allow active engagement throughout the 3-day event. By sponsoring the involvement of 30 attendees, we hope to create an inclusive, locally representative conference that enables collaboration and idea exchange for community members who otherwise may not be able to attend. Our aim is to use the available funding to maximize local participation.

Jury decision

edit

Dear Umar2z and colleagues from Wikimedia Gombe Network,

We are sincerely grateful for the time and effort you invested in applying for a micro-grant for WikiIndaba 2023. Your interest in contributing to this event is highly appreciated.

Unfortunately, we have to inform you that your application was not selected for the micro-grant. We received an overwhelming number of quality applications (77 applications for only 7 grants), which made the decision process extremely challenging. Given the constraints, our focus has been on projects from underrepresented communities or groups that lack on-site representation at the conference. The team decided therefore to provide the grants only to countries where there are no user groups at the moment.

Though your application was not selected, we greatly value your interest in WikiIndaba 2023. To stay engaged and catch all the latest updates, we invite you to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and instagram. Additionally, we encourage you to subscribe to our YouTube channel, where we'll be sharing conference highlights and key sessions. We also suggest reaching out to your group members who will be participating in the conference, so they can share experiences and learnings with you.

Best regards,

Organizing Committee, WikiIndaba Conference 2023 -- WikiIndaba2021 (talk) 15:20, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your feedback looking forward to the conference. Umar2z (talk) 13:02, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
