Description

We propose to host a local in-person gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts in Gombe State, Nigeria, as part of the WikiIndaba 2023 conference. WikiIndaba is an annual conference that brings together Wikimedians from across Africa to share knowledge, experiences, and collaborate on Wikimedia projects. This year's WikiIndaba edition is scheduled to take place from 3-5 November 2023 in Agadir, Morocco, as a primarily hybrid event, allowing participants to engage both in-person and virtually.

**Location:

Our proposed location for the local in-person gathering in Gombe State is the prestigious Gombe State University. This institution offers an ideal setting for Wikimedia enthusiasts, students, academics, and professionals to come together to participate in WikiIndaba 2023. The university's facilities and central location within Gombe State make it an accessible and accommodating venue.

**Objective:

1. Facilitate Local Participation: Our primary goal is to provide an opportunity for Wikimedia contributors and enthusiasts in Gombe State and neighboring regions to actively participate in WikiIndaba 2023.

2. Knowledge Sharing: We aim to foster knowledge sharing, collaboration, and networking among attendees by hosting workshops, discussions, and sessions related to Wikimedia projects.

3. Enhance Wikimedia Presence: This gathering will contribute to increasing the visibility and impact of Wikimedia projects in Gombe State and Nigeria as a whole.

**Activities:

- Local Sessions: We will organize locally-relevant sessions, workshops, and discussions led by experienced Wikimedians and experts in various Wikimedia projects.

- Community Meet-ups: Encourage networking and collaboration among local Wikimedia contributors and enthusiasts.

- Live Streaming: Facilitate participation in the WikiIndaba conference by live-streaming key sessions and presentations from the Agadir event.

- Pre-recorded Sessions: Screen pre-recorded sessions, ensuring that attendees have access to a wide range of WikiIndaba content.

The request is from a Wikiemdia Club, not an affiliate Usergroup, chapter or a yet to be non group, but rather an arm of Wikimedia Nigeria Usergroup in Gombe State University. The funds would also be sent to individual account.

- Usmanagm is the founder of the Wikimedia Fan Club at Gombe State University and the applicant for the proposed WikiIndaba 2023 project in the state. He has played a key role in facilitating numerous projects in northeastern Nigeria, including leading Wikipedia Awareness in Akko and Wikimedia Awareness at Pen Resource University.

- YusufuAM, an experienced Wikimedian, serves as the Director of Programs at the club. He has actively participated in various Wiki activities and achieved significant recognition, winning the first prize at events such as Wikimedia Awareness in Federal University of Kashere and Wikimedia Awareness in Federal Polytechnic Kaltungo, among others. Additionally, he has contributed as a facilitator at Wikimedia Awareness in Akko.

- Other active editors and stakeholders will also be engaged in the project such as Sadiqy56, Ibjaja055, Bembety, Abdulazeez Taufeeq, and many others will be engaged.

Outcomes

We are targeting approximately 25 editors to actively participate in the WikiIndaba 2023 project in Gombe State, Nigeria. These editors will engage in various activities, including workshops, discussions, and networking events, to enhance their involvement in Wikimedia projects. The microfunding support will facilitate their participation and contribute to the success of this initiative.

We are sincerely grateful for the time and effort you invested in applying for a micro-grant for WikiIndaba 2023. Your interest in contributing to this event is highly appreciated.

Unfortunately, we have to inform you that your application was not selected for the micro-grant. We received an overwhelming number of quality applications (77 applications for only 7 grants), which made the decision process extremely challenging. Given the constraints, our focus has been on projects from underrepresented communities or groups that lack on-site representation at the conference. The team decided therefore to provide the grants only to countries where there are no user groups at the moment.
