Description

edit

Please add description of the request, with all the necessary details.

The Dagaare Language is one of the indigenous/underrepresented and low resourced languages in Ghana. The Dagaare Wikimedia Community saw the need to leverage the power of the various Wikimedia projects to promote the language on the digital space and started the Dagaare Wikipedia Incubator early this year and have gathered over 1000 articles already and counting. Some of these articles still need improvements that require specific skill set by the community members. It is a community of total newbies (with the exception of the Co-Lead), who are enthusiastically leaving no stone unturned to learn the various skills on how to contribute the wikimedia projects in general and to getting their Wikipedia out of the incubator. The incubation is a significant milestone for the Dagaare language, spoken by over one million people in Ghana and Burkina Faso, and for the global Wikimedia movement, which strives to make knowledge accessible to everyone in their language. The aim of the community is to make Dagaare speakers feel that their language is important and can be used to create knowledge. It is to empower the community to document its history, culture, and traditions, and to share them with the world. The community members can only do that by learning the requisite skills and strategies to contribute to the Wikimedia projects. It is not possible to achieve that in isolation without getting the opportunity to connect with and learn from other Wikimedians across Africa and the world at large.

This request seeks to source the micro funding support for the community members to get to participate in a satellite event to be hosted in Wa in the Upper West Region of Ghana for the WikiIndaba 2023 where participants will have the opportunity to view and discuss the livestream sessions online. The platform will offer them the opportunity to learn from and connect with their colleagues Wikimedians and to get inspirations from the contributions from Wikimedians across Africa.

They will also have the opportunity to ask questions and respond to feedback questions to enable the team to assess the impact of the event.

Jury decision

edit

Dear Alhassan Mohammed Awal and colleagues from Dagaare Wikimedia Community,

We are sincerely grateful for the time and effort you invested in applying for a micro-grant for WikiIndaba 2023. Your interest in contributing to this event is highly appreciated.

Unfortunately, we have to inform you that your application was not selected for the micro-grant. We received an overwhelming number of quality applications (77 applications for only 7 grants), which made the decision process extremely challenging. Given the constraints, our focus has been on projects from underrepresented communities or groups that lack on-site representation at the conference. The team decided therefore to provide the grants only to countries where there are no user groups at the moment.

Though your application was not selected, we greatly value your interest in WikiIndaba 2023. To stay engaged and catch all the latest updates, we invite you to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and instagram. Additionally, we encourage you to subscribe to our YouTube channel, where we'll be sharing conference highlights and key sessions. We also suggest reaching out to your group members who will be participating in the conference, so they can share experiences and learnings with you.

Best regards,

Organizing Committee, WikiIndaba Conference 2023 -- WikiIndaba2021 (talk) 13:59, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
