WikiForHumanRights 2023 in South-West of Nigeria

The objective of the #WikiForHumanRights initiative is to ensure that impartial, evidence-based, and up-to-date information about our Right to a Healthy Environment is available to all. This right is not only recognized by the United Nations but also serves as a means of linking human rights with the threefold planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. The UN Environmental Program has emphasized the necessity of reconciling with nature and integrating human rights into the remedies.

What edit

This is a public writing competition to create and improve articles that will strengthen Yoruba Wikipedia's coverage of pollution, climate change, negetation including flora and fauna, and other related tpoics. The winners will receive great prizes. The Campaign is organized as part of the global WikiForHumanRights campaign. We will be hosting two online trainings via Zoom (Webinar) on Yoruba Wikipedia for anyone interested in learning more about editing on it. These training sessions will be followed by the online contest.

When edit

The online training sessions (Webinar) will take place on 5 and 6 May 2023 between 6:00pm and 8:00pm. We will share the link as soon as its ready.

The writing contest will run from 00:01 on 1 May 2023 (WAT) until 23:59 on 15 May 2023 (WAT).

How edit

The contest is simple in structure, based on a KISS point system: You get points while creating and improving articles, with the goal for each participant being to gain as many points as possible.

Who edit

This Contest is open to editors from all over the world, irrespective of their age, sex, gender, orientation, religion, race or ethnicity. Any Wikipedian with a named account (on any wiki, including the incubator) can participate. All participating editors, must however, register their username on the participants page

This contest is organized by the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation It is implemented by a team of volunteers: Agbalagba, Macdanpets, and T Cells (technical support, and advisor)

Focus topics edit

The United Nations highlights the significance of addressing the Triple Planetary Crises when dealing with the right to a healthy environment. These crises include:

The importance of environmental justice, climate justice, and human rights-centered approaches to local, national, and international actions on the climate crisis.
The impact of pollution on human well-being, with a particular focus on the direct impact on other human rights such as the right to water and the right to health.
The connection between biodiversity and human rights, recognizing how human well-being is reliant on maintaining a diverse and healthy natural ecosystem.
