WikiED Training Uganda 2023

1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?

The strategy here was to get 3 teachers from 2 secondary level schools, they had to have some level of computer proficiency. This was aimed at ensuring that little time would be spent on improving their IT skills overall to ensure a fast paced training experience. However a total of 5 trainees were confirmed by the onset of the training. 3 from one school, 1 from another and one community member who lacked the necessary trainining were approved and training initiated on 6th May 2023. I continued looking out for another teacher from any other school and identified one that would now complete the desired total of 6. This one was identified in the second week of training. I had to look beyond the two previously identified schools to manage to reach the target, with this I realised that it's important to be prepared for eventualities and be ready to be flexible depending on the situation you presented with.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?

Targeting the begining of the training to be in the holiday time helped, however I soon realised that not all schools set off for holidays at the same time and that some of the identified teachers continued being busy even during this hitherto thought to be a less busy period. I had to reachout to each and understand their unique circumstances and gauge on which aspects of the programme I could tweak to ensure all of them feel comfortable and have live sessions where everyone could attend.

3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?

The biggest challenge has been that the teachers were totally unaware of the foundation and we had to start with the basics and water their interest in the training objectives over time.

Most of the identified teachers have extra curicula activities at schools and there are times when it get's really impossible for them to attend sessions.

There is an identified gap in communication, at times you get regrets when the session is supposed to be ongoing. This creates logistical challenges due to these unforeseen twists.

4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.

Before the beginning of the training a comunication was sent out notifying membership about what was planned. This was done through the community WhatsApp groups, Telegram group, Twitter accounts to where used for this purpose. Videos of the training sessions are uploaded and links shared for the community to be abreast with how the sessions are going.

5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.

All the sessions curried out so far have been virtual, we have taken advantage of the Zoom remote meeting application, recordings of which have been properly editing using a video editing software and there after uploaded on YouTube. The content is vailed to the general community for followup and use as part of the general learning experience and archiving for posterity.
