What is your idea?

Wiki loves sports is a first global multi-language wiki campaign that encourage the participation and promotes creation of contents about (but not exclusively) women, non-binary and para-athletes in Wikimedia projects

We aim at localising this project, through creating and improving articles about Nigeria sport, Olympic games participation, commonwealth participation,professional athletes, medalist, medals, World cups, women sport competitions, para athletes, basketball, hand ball, golf, volleyball, tennis and many other sport all other cultural recreational games in Nigeria on English Wikipedia.

We also aim at adding credibility to existing articles, latest information and updates by adding reliable references and content to article on Wikipedia also bridging gender gap on articles about women in sports.


Why is it important?

The project is important because we would improve articles about Nigeria's sport, para athletes, and articles relating to sports in Nigeria, creating new articles, adding references, categories, wikilinks, add more relevant content lacking on existing articles and improve stub articles on Nigerian sports

Through this project we aim at empowering existing volunteers editors and bring new editors to the Wikimedia movement.

This project in line with the Wikimedia movement 2030 strategy recommendation of identifying topics for impact, and the following initiatives: list of high-impact topics, bridging content notability gaps and gender based gap in articles of Nigeria women in sports, covering articles on their achievements and recognition in global sport games, like Olympic games, para athletic, commonwealth games, World Cup competition, Caf championship, and west Africa games.

Is your project already in progress?

No. We hope to start this project once the grant is approved.


How is this project relevant to credibility and Wikipedia?

The project would promote the notability of Nigeria sports/recreational activities /professional athletes and other sport related contents on the English Wikipedia by creating and improving articles and references them using reliable sources. Our overall goal is to improve and greatly add information about Nigeria sport and sport persons and achievements on the English Wikipedia

We also aim to update and improve the quality of existing articles and contents on women in Nigeria sport on the English Wikipedia as a free knowledge encyclopedia of information, creating and improving articles about Nigerian sports and games related contents.


What is the ultimate impact of this project?

Our target impact is adding vital content lacking on English Wikipedia on Nigerian sports related articles, bridging gender gap, adding credible references about Nigeria sports, sportspersons and professional athletes, para athletes on English Wikipedia.

1.At least 1,000 articles about Nigeria sports to be created and improved articles on Nigeria Olympic Games medalists, articles about Nigeria Paralympic Games medalists, CAF medalists, Commonwealth Medalists and Ecowas games medalists on English Wikipedia.

2. Training and empowering New and existing Wikimedian editors to actively contribute to free knowledge movement of Wikimedia foundation.


Can your project scale?

Yes. Wiki loves Sports is a global campaign, that gives recognition to sport games and athletes around the world, on english Wikipedia, Wiki sport will aim at creating and improving articles about Nigeria sports and games also bridge the gender gap on Nigerian women in sports, which can bridge the content gap and knowledge inequity about Nigerian sports on Wikipedia.

And with the help of our team of experienced Wikimedian editors, we believe our goal for this project will be achieved.


Why are you the people to do it?

Being an active member contributing to the Wikimedia free knowledge movement, I and my team who are also experienced in training and empowering editors will be carrying out the project. We are highly passionate about promoting the credibility and reliability of the content on Wikipedia.

Kingaustin07 (project lead and Coordinator) is an experienced editor on Wikipedia, has participated In lots of Wikipedia events, won different competitions and edit a thon contest since joining the movement. I will be training editors on how to know notable reference and how to add them to Wikipedia articles.

Ebubechukwu1(facilitator) she is an experienced editor that has trained new and existing editors during the Wiki GLAM project and has also actively contributed to the Wikimedia movement. She will be helping me with training the editors and facilitating the event both online and offline.

Sylvesterchukwu04 (logistics and transportation) He is also an experienced editor, he has over 3 thousand edit contributions, he has also has enough experience training New editors, and also handling logistics. He will be in charge of logistics and transportation during this project.


What is the impact of your idea on diversity and inclusiveness of the Wikimedia movement?

This project would have a direct impact on diversity and inclusiveness. It is essentially designed to bridge the content gap and gender gaps on Wikipedia by adding reliable information , as well as to improve on the credibility of articles relating to Nigeria sports and sporting achievements on English Wikipedia.Therefore, this would also provide another major entryway into training New editors and empowering existing editors to contribute to free knowledge equity of the Wikimedia movement.


What are the challenges associated with this project and how you will overcome them?

The challenges to overcome is training and keeping up with editors and making them active Contributors to free knowledge.

We aim at hosting physical events, edit a thon and following up the new editors and existing editors.

There will be series of physical meetups organized to create awareness and to also train new and existing editors, on how to actively contribute to English Wikipedia, create and improve articles relating to Nigeria sports on Wikipedia and also edit a thon.

Online training will also be organised for participants, especially those that were not able to attend the physical training, this training will enable editors get more understanding at what was taught during the physical training, and also an avenue to ask questions on challenges faced while editing on Wikipedia, and how to participate in the edit a thon contest.

Edit a thon contest will be on during the course of this project as participants will be rewarded for their active participation and contribute to the campaign goal, top participants will be given prizes.

Through this plans we hope to overcome this challenges and making sure that our goals for this project are achieved and also contributing to the global goal of Improving articles on Sports to also engage lovers of Sports


How will you spend your funds?

The fund will cover for all expenses during the three months of this project campaign and training.

.Prizes (1st, 2nd, 3rd, positions, 1st and 2nd Prize for gender diversity, = $1,400

. Media, Publicity and Advocacy = $1,500 . Data packages and Reimbursements = $800 . Project Management and Administrative Costs = $2,300

Requested funds = $6,000, to cover mainly for project management and administrative costs, as well as, the cost for Media, publicity and advocacy, data packages and reimbursement during the three months of this project and also cost for prizes for top participating editors.
