What is your idea?

Research has shown that most emerging languages projects lacks references. However, many of those with them are in English. This is because editors rely on online resources that are mostly available in English when they are referencing articles and quotes. The lack of enough reference adversely affect the quality of contents on local language Wikimedia project and it also impede local readers who cannot read English from further reading.

In order to help solve the problem of lack of reference in these emerging projects, Ghana Histo Cita-Thon seeks to identify offline resources such as books, journals, and newspapers in local languages, train and assist Librarians and Wikimedia volunteers in listing them on wikidata. And train community members and volunteers of the selected language on the importance of citation and how they can use offline resources to enhance the quality of their projects.

The project will start with three languages, that is Twi (tw.wikipedia.org), and Dagaare, Fante which are currently in incubator.

Why is it important?

The project is importance because it will build the capacity of Wikimedia volunteers and editors from emerging and underrepresented communities to create and improve high-impact content in their various projects. It also have the potential of bridging the gap in teams of readers and users of projects by emerging language communities.
