- Abstract (maximum 500 words)
Many reasons have been posited for why women don't edit Wikipedia but very rarely are women asked to give voice to their concerns or ideas in a group environment. This submission would begin with a five minute talk on the Women's Outreach work I have been doing in the UK along with an analysis of the feedback I have received from women, editors and non-editors alike, about their Wikipedia experience and what in some cases stop them from joining our community. The floor will then be opened up for a fifteen-minute discussion on what barriers the attendees feel are present in their respective countries which may stop women from editing with special emphasis on the Indian community; as well as an exploration of what trends are seen globally. There will then be a ten minute interactive presentation where ideas are presented for how to reach out to women. This will include information on what has been successful in the UK and what hasn't. After the presentation attendees will be asked to complete a short feedback form which will then be added to the feedback obtained through discussion to produce a working outline of how to go forward in India with regards to women editors, as created by those who attended. This will then be made available for discussion by the Wikimedia India chapter and its members.
This presentation would benefit from longer than half-an-hour to ensure that those attending were all given fair time. However, it would be still workable within the half-hour time frame.
- Do you have a valid Indian VISA?
I do not and I would be requesting a scholarship to attend solely based on the opportunities to learn and give this presentation.
