Wikipedia's policies on verifiability and reliable sources are based on certain conceptions of the authenticity of knowledge and forms of its creation and dissemination. However, rather counter-intuitively, the project has failed to respond to changes in these conceptions and forms with the evolution of the Internet space, thereby placing a dangerous amount of reliance on traditional 'media' and subjecting itself to the vagaries and flaws of the same. By analysing the effects of a recent controversy in India involving a 'media' blackout and questions over the authenticity of the information disseminated by the traditional 'media', the presentation demonstrates why it is critical to broaden perspectives and evolve methods for citing newer, dynamic sources of (often collectively produced, open-source) information such as blogs and social networks, especially in politically volatile environments, and how this is essential to maintaining the Wikipedia's core value of neutrality.
