Background edit

Since 2021, we have been committed to increasing and improving neutral, fact-based, and up-to-date information on climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Our primary goal is to address the scarcity of free, easy-to-understand, and reliable resources. We believe that Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia are the best places to start.

In the last two years, we have exceeded our target number of created and edited Wikipedia articles; trained new but dedicated editors; improved video tutorials; enlisted past contributors to facilitate edithatons, orientations, and photowalks; and tapped external networks for on-the-ground information about the environment.

Goals edit

This year, we hope to build on what we've started and improve on our flaws by addressing previous feedback and recommendations. We also intend to include platforms such as Wikimedia Commons, Wikiquote and Wiktionary as additional platforms to work on in order to cater to our participants' diverse interests and capabilities. This will allow them to meet other volunteers who work on projects other than Wikipedia. We anticipate a larger and more equipped group of volunteers advocating for free knowledge and environmental protection in more creative and diverse ways in this third iteration of #WikiForHumanRights.

Strategy edit

We decided to broaden our platform scope in order to see more diverse engagements. So instead of focusing solely on Wikipedia, we would invite contributions to Wiktionary, Wikiquote (Bikol & Tagalog), and Commons.

Our approach for this project includes three components: skill and leadership development, advocacy, and content creation.

  1. Skill and leadership development refers to new volunteer training on how to navigate various wikiprojects and platforms. This is also where they will learn about how the Wikimedia communities collaborate both locally and globally.
  2. Advocacy refers to the campaign's theme. This is where participants' understanding of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution will be expanded and deepened.
  3. Content creation refers to activities in which participants contribute to Wikimedia projects of their choice now that they have the two components mentioned above. This could include things like editing, image uploading, article creation, campaign promotion, and so on.

Incorporating these three components ensures that the project's impact touches on the cognitive, affective, and creative dimensions of the participants. We hope that this will have a long-term impact on them as people and as volunteers who advocate for free knowledge and environmental protection.
