In this episode we go back to the origins of movement strategy. We shed a light on some of the concepts that are foundational to the strategy and to how Wikimedia projects are governed since the beginning: decentralization and subsidiarity. Our guests explain where these concepts came from, and why they are central to the future governance model. We explore what decentralization could mean in practice for areas such as fundraising, software development and advocacy.
Our guests are...
- Claudia Garad, Executive Director of Wikimedia Österreich since 2012, member of the Roles & Responsibilities Working Group during phase 2 of the Movement Strategy process, President of Wikimedia Europe since 2022
- Guillaume Paumier, Wikimedian since 2005, working for the Foundation since 2009, architect of the first phase of movement strategy which led to the strategic direction.

Our guests are...

In this episode we talk with Denny Vrandečić and Lydia Pintscher about the software products that are changing the way the Movement leverages data to move towards the strategic direction of knowledge equity and knowledge as a service. Lydia gives an update on what is happening with Wikidata, and Denny shares about a newer project - Abstract Wikipedia, which aims to let more people share more knowledge in more languages. Abstract Wikipedia allows people to create and maintain Wikipedia articles in a language-independent way. A particular language Wikipedia can then translate the article into its language. We also touch on Wikifunctions, and large-language models and how it all relates.
Our guests are...
- Lydia Pintscher, Portfolio lead for Wikidata at Wikimedia Deutschland
- Denny Vrandečić, Founder of Wikidata and currently leading the development of Wikifunctions and Abstract Wikipedia at the Wikimedia Foundation

Guest interview:
Regional and thematic hubs continue to be the hot topic among many Wikimedians pursuant to the strategy recommendations. Many affiliates and volunteers have done hub-like work for a long time, and hubs now seem to provide a vehicle to formalize and financially sustain that work. The idea of having structures that help people share resources, do fundraising together, and make decisions at the regional level reverberates with many. Today we have Johnny Allegre and Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska to give us updates on hub activities in Asia and Eastern Europe.
Our guests are...
- Johnny Alegre, President of Philippine WIkimedia Community UG and member of the ESEAP Hub
- Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska, Community Support Team Manager at Wikimedia Poland and member of the CEE Hub Interim Steering Committee

In this episode we talk about new projects to connect the people of our movement for mutual aid. Our movement is constantly growing and diversifying, all across the globe. New people are joining and new communities are forming every day. As volunteers and as staff of affiliates, they are having to acquire new skills, figure out how to organize, form organizations, do outreach and advocacy, and work with institutions and governments. For every skill or piece of knowledge that a Wikimedian is looking for, there is probably another Wikimedian who has figured it out or has the answer. But how do they find each other?
Our guests are...
- Rebecca O'Neill, Project Coordinator of Wikimedia Community Ireland since 2017
- Jessica Stephenson, Evaluation Program Officer with the Community Resources at the Wikimedia Foundation since April 2021

We are looking back at years of complaints about how Wikimedia technology is outdated and exclusive. Non-encyclopedic forms of knowledge are still impossible or hard to insert into our existing formats. The last big innovation from our movement is Wikidata, which is now almost ten years old. Movement Strategy calls on us to innovate our technical and social systems so that new and marginalized communities can join and share their knowledge. We talk about the UNLOCK accelerator program, how it is being implemented in collaboration with WMS and WMDE this year, and explore how the movement can become more of an innovation ecosystem.
Our guests are...
- Kannika Thaimai, Program lead of the UNLOCK accelerator at Wikimedia Deutschland. Before joining Wikimedia Deutschland in 2019, Kannika worked in a social startup and supported other social startups through their various development phases.
- Ivana Madžarević, Program and Community Support Manager at Wikimedia Serbia. Together with Kannika, Ivana runs the accelerator program for innovation in our movement. Before joining Wikimedia Serbia 8 years ago, Ivana worked many years in the NGO sector.
