• Rationale
  • As a coalition of United States-based Wikimedia community members, WALRUS represents a large number of constituents that work in a variety of areas from on-wiki activities to outreach at universities and GLAM institutions to addressing knowledge gaps and technical shortcomings that help not just the United States but the global community. Because it gathers such a large set of different editors, the goal of ensuring equity in decision making is crucial, by serving as a regional hub, participating in the formation of a Global Council and helping to create a Movement Charter. As a network, WALRUS serves as a way to coordinate across stakeholders, and we regularly communicate and collaborate around our respective activities. Finally, projects fostered by the United States community, such as Black Lunch Table, AfroCROWD, Art and Feminism, Women In Red, WikiEdu, GLAM Wiki, and many more, all focus on innovating in free knowledge, by addressing knowledge equity issues through constant experimentation with partners and initiatives. Additionally, because of the focus of many US-based groups on reaching new participants and creating a welcoming atmosphere, we are adding safety and inclusion as a fourth recommendation that WALRUS would like to highlight.
