Along with cultural institutions, the German-language Wikimedia organizations encourage Wikimedia project volunteers to make collections accessible photographically. The acronym GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) denotes the activities of volunteers worldwide around culture. To this end, the GLAM on Tour event format was one of the activities developed in German-speaking countries: over a weekend, Wikimedia contributors in your area meet at a museum, an archive, or a library. The staff guide you through the collections, where the objects may be photographed. Afterwards, the pictures can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. When furnished with appropriate categories, entire collections can be procured in this way for Wikimedia projects and made accessible to the public. On a smaller scale, there is also the KulTour format. In recent years, volunteers have produced more than 10,000 photos for Wikimedia Commons relating to culture, adding them to open knowledge. Don’t hesitate to get involved yourself!
