Visibility Project 2023
The Visibility Project 2023 is the 2023 edition of the visibility project. The project aims to improve the visibility of African women and increase the number of professional women contributors on Wikipedia. The project will focus on a month-long Wikipedia training for women in media in Kenya and Nigeria.
Background edit
The African Women in Media is a non-governmental organisation with the vision that ‘one-day African women will have equal access to representation and opportunities in media industries and media content.’ AWiM aims to create enabling environments for African women who work in media industries and to change how African women are represented in media content. It does this through training, research, advocacy, and partnerships. Through AWiM events, create opportunities for knowledge exchange, building networks, and economic empowerment of women in media. The Wikimedia User Group Nigeria was recognized by the Affiliations Committee of the Wikimedia Foundation on the 28th September 2015. Our first activity as a recognized affiliate was the Wiki Loves Africa 2015 tagged Africa's Culture in fashion and Adornment. This was followed by the Workshop for Students of Fountain University, a two-day workshop organized for students of Fountain University, as part of Wikipedia 15. Having operated as a Wikimedia User Group Nigeria for more than 6 years, the user group registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, Nigeria as a charitable organization and nonprofit organization in Nigeria on the 31st of October 2018. Wikimedia UG Nigeri's primary objective is to promote free access to knowledge through Wikipedia and other sister projects run by the Wikimedia Foundation. It is committed to the development, growth, and free distribution of educational contents in Nigeria. It empowers people to contribute to Wikipedia and other sister projects to ensure that knowledge is freely accessible. It share's the ideal of a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge, and here in Nigeria, we shall play a key role in the actualization of that vision.
Scope of Work edit
- Training: collection of resources for training and release of licenses under CCBYSA, design and launch of a program dashboard for measuring project metrics, communication channel, and design of a project landing page (Meta).
- Webinar Session: Four (5) online Wikipedia hands-on training sessions focusing on different aspects of the module will be organized.Details about focused areas are listed in the table above.
- Mentorship: attending to feedback from students, allocating assignments to students, tracking articles, reviewing and rating articles before publication to avoid harassment and the nomination of articles for deletion.
- Reporting: project reporting, number of editors participating, number of bytes contributed, number of articles created, number of articles edited, and the total number of photos uploaded to Commons.
