Fundraiser Update

I want to thank you for your help translating the Kiswahili core messages, we have a few more translations needed in order to build the donation landing pages in Kiswahili. Currently, the Jimmy Appeal needs to be translated as it has yet to be done. You can find all translation requests at the translation hub on meta and you can follow the progress of the fundraiser in real time by tracking the fundraiser statistics. Also if you haven't already, you can subscribe to the translators-l mailing list for all new requests and major changes. Wikipedia Editors Survey 2011/Translation/sw

Hey Lloffiwr. I saw that you were working on the Swahili translation of the Wikipedia Editors Survey 2011 yesterday. Unfortunately, the deadline is today and there's still a lot to do. In addition, LimeSurvey doesn't have a Swahili interface translation... so we would probably have to get that translated too before running the survey in Swahili. The reason I'm reaching out to you is because I don't think you'll be able to get it done in time and I really don't want to see you waste your time and your hard work! :-( Cbrown1023 talk 20:23, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your message via e-mail also. I didn't have much time to devote to this, given the short deadline, and nor did my main Tanzanian collaborator. So I am resigned to this effort going to waste and am not worried about it. At least the central notice will be in Swahili. I'm sure you may get some interesting answers from East Africa through the English version of the survey. It's difficult to tell how many users would have access to a computer and broadband connection and also not know enough English to do the survey, but this is not likely to be many. Still, if there were any, they would be the most interesting respondents to the survey, in my opinion.

With regard to the 'LimeSurvey' you mention, is this a MediaWiki extension or is it an off-wiki software package? If a Mediawiki extension, which one is it and if off-wiki, is there a way to translate it, anticipating future surveys? Lloffiwr 08:06, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

LimeSurvey is actually a free and open-source survey platform. It's not part of MediaWiki, it's a completely separate piece of software; our installation is located survey.wikimedia.org. LimeSurvey does support translations and, while they don't use something as helpful as translatewiki, their translation process isn't that horrible. :-) They use poedit, which is a somewhat common way to translate software messages. If you're interested in working on this, you can visit their translation instructions page.

How to navigate there the best being an utter newbie? :)

It takes a while to learn how to translate on translatewiki.net. I joined before the new introduction to translating was written so I'm no au fait with that. You have managed to post the above messages, so you know the basic principles of editing. There is no harm in starting an account there and requesting translator rights to work on the en-gb localisation. I would recommend that you do this by working through the Getting Started wizard accessible by clicking on 'Start translating' on the main page. The usual place to ask for help if you get stuck is the support page, but you are welcome to ask me on my talk page if you prefer. Translating to en-gb is slightly different because it is a sub-section of the source language and doesn't have a portal of its own. I think you could venture to use the Portal:En discussion page for discussing with fellow translators to en-gb, and just include en-gb in the header of your posts. I can assure you that after learning how to edit the messages, contributing to translatewiki.net is great fun. Lloffiwr 12:39, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

I've signed up, confirmed the email and set some preferences. It was written that I should create my user page then. I've made one but I still have some difficulty. Look:

My nick there is the same. I wonder if you can help me sort out how to deal with such language settings (I couldn't notice (or make out) any of those 'babel's when creating my page there). I tried "Support -> Search: 'User page'" but couldn't reach any immediate way to brighten my mind.

Translatewiki.net is a website which translates open source software, including the software MediaWiki. Meta is a wiki which organises the projects operated by Wikimedia Foundation. Wikimedia Foundation uses Mediawiki software in its projects. Other wikis also use MediaWiki software. Meta:Babylon is the page where translations of central notices and other documents produced by the Wikimedia Foundation is organised. So translations on translatewiki.net are used in all Mediawiki websites, but translations on Meta:Babylon are used on Wikimedia Foundation wikis only. Lloffiwr 18:09, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Ah.. "Wiki-mikki" - yes, thanks:D I'm now exactly trying to explore those structure and so on of Wiki projects. (A bit overwhelmed with other cases, so the trying is quite skidding:-D)

Sw-Wiki / JWLetter

On sw we have an ugly version of JW's call for donations. Somebody made it a 4-liner which is just to wide for the average laptop screen like mine - other wikis I looked at have it as a 3-liner. And secondly the text is not good Swahili. Should read: "Usome tafadhali: Barua kutoka Jimmy Wales, mwanzilishaji wa wikipedia!". The text tself is not this years appeal but probably last Year's, which I cannot check. If you know anyone who can correct the Swahili and make it a 3-liner, I appreciate.
